Posers with Roof Boxen

The one in pictures you can clearly see the rain through which we drove. There is an upside-down lip that (like a pre-filter) removes the water as the wind goes over it, no soft seal per se, but zero water entry inside.

I use a Thule Ascent 1100 all the time. It's very low profile, fits skis nicely and mounts in a few minutes. I never thought of cargo boxes as poser-gear. To be honest, there's probably more box-clad Subarus getting out into the wilds than many of the uber exotic overlander rigs in the world.

I never knew people disliked these things and thought they were for possers. Inside mine you will find skis and a reversed camber split board. I think it will come off for the summer by mid July, still getting it.

Is it even remotely waterproof? That's the problem I have with those things. They don't have a seal on them at all.

"water proof" I'd say no, but darn near. On my two older Yakima ones I have never had anything get wet. I always pack as if it could get wet but never had issue. Even in the one that has the mangled foam around the edge.

I think it's a non issue for me.

Years ago (17) I traded a Burley trailer for a Barrcrafters cargo roof box made to carry about 5 pairs of skis. I moved it from one car to another and it went on every trip I took, skiing or on family trips. It was covered with so many stickers of places we went we had to start on the inside. I sold it not long ago one of the selling point the buyer liked was it was covered in the stickers. He promised to continue the tradition and place a sticker where ever they traveled to. Wish I had a picture of it.

Two is always better than one... :D

I keep two on my Subaru all winter (sometimes for years),

I can load one up with snowboards and the other with clothes and gear I want to keep dry and have the car empty exept for passengers.
The bags made to fit in the Thule boxes are great, they make packing much easier.

I've used a Yakima SkyBox 16short on my Element and now the Burb for several years. Skis, boards, crap, etc. No leakage but...make sure that no gear is forcing the top up past the bottom lip by any amount whatsoever! The slipstream will catch it and rip the lid up and off. Don't ask how I know this...:sombrero

I have one (Thule 1600) on my Outback... Mounts on the stock rack in 5 minutes, dismounts in less. It's on for trips, sits in a rope sling over top of the car all other times. No soft seals in mine, and I've never had anything get wet. Just two pieces of plastic that are pretty close to each other on the base and top. Very nice to put baby stuff and clothes in there and carry the dog, two kids, two adults and cooler in the car. Makes the long trips very enjoyable, poser or not.

Is there any reason to pick Thule vs Yakima?

I think they are both quality. The cheaper Thules you see at ohter retailers, I think it is called the "frontier" was really flimsy. I bought it and I could feel it moving around on my rack. I quickly returned it and bought a yakima skybox 16. The newer ones allow you to open from either side, which has come in handy depending if I have a bike or kayak mounted on the other side.

I've never had any water leakage, and there is no seal that I'm aware of.

Tip for box owners: I had a cheap sleeping pad from walmart or target that was given to me. I think it was only $5-10. I was about to throw it away and had an idea to put in in the bottom of my box. Mounted it with velcro tape, so it is removeable, but never had to. It is great for when you have somewhat loose items that could rattle around. I used to hear my kayak paddles bang around on bumps, but this really helped.

Interesting about the waterproofness. Thanks. I guess I prejudged incorrectly.

Actually Rob,
I made the same assumptions before I got mine, and I still do worry about it a little. I still plan for it leaking just the same. I don't put anything in there in a way that a little leaking would do any harm. Or at least I try to.
