Possible 1960 Series II Build...

I have recently found a 1960 Series II with an 88" wheelbase. It has been parked for the last 10yrs. The last 4yrs have been under a shelter. When it was moved to the shelter, it had to be pushed with a tractor because it would not roll for one reason or another. I will be going back to look it over during the holiday and will post some pics of it. Pretty much I expect this to be a full body off restoration. I know it needs a lot of frame work(rust) or a new frame. Who knows if the motor would run or if the trans is any good. It wouldn't roll when it was last moved. But my buddy said he would sell it to me for $1,500.

I know nothing about this vehicle but I do have some restoration experience. I have a full set of tools, a wire fed arc welder and empty space in my garage to work in.

My question is this, Do you think its worth the $1,500 and How much do you think it would cost me(ball park, when I mean ball park I mean less than 5k, less than 3k...) just to get the thing running?

I am not looking for anything to crazy or fancy. Less is more to me. The only must have I want out of this truck would be a working heater:) I would want it for trail riding and beach trips.

Moved this thread to the Land Rover sub-forum from the Toyota sub-forum. I think you'll get better input here since everything seems to point to the vehicle having been made in Solihull.

It's in your hands to save the grand old beast . . . Fate has brought you to this . . . I think it's time to ponder the timeless call to action: "Now is the time for all great men to come to the aid of the Rover in the field . . . " :ylsmoke: (And 1500.00 ain't too bad a price either . . .)

Buy it Brian!! You know I'll be over as much as I can to help. There is a HUGE rover network here in NC and beyond that can literally guide you through each step of the restoration. Bring back a piece of history, and have a cool truck in the end!!

Arggh! Fellow Pirate.

Where are you and the LR located? I'd be happy to look it over for you or if you can post or send me some pics it would be easier to form an opinion on price and budget ideas.

When you mention it had to be pushed by a tractor because it won't roll that sounds like you've got a big job ahead. If the frame is gone I'm guessing the bulkhead is also a patchwork of rust. We know the engine won't run, if it won't roll then the axles might be frozen or rusted in place, the frame is rusted so what do you have left to work with and is that worth $1500.00?

Let me know how I can help.

I pulled two out of a field and built one. If you have the energy and are willing to put in the time, there is much to be learned and appreciated from this old vehicle. I've never regretted the many hours put into mine. It always repays me when i get the chance to take it out. Go for it!

No matter how bad, he can't die in a field! Rolling off Lion's Back, OK, but not in a field . . . ! 1500.00 is too little . . . ! :wings:

Depends on how bad the frame really is and how bad the firewall is. If they're both very rusty it could start to get expensive. It won't start or roll? It doesn't sound like a $1500 truck to me. I've bought several parts trucks in similar condition for much less. For $5K you can get a decent, running 88" which you can start to enjoy right away and work on it as time and money permits. That $1500 pile of parts will end up costing you quite a bit if the frame and fire wall is bad.

This is turning into "it takes a village to build a rover"!

If the NC crew works together I think we can help Brian decide if this is for him and so on! Looking forward to pics and they will help us help you. At first pass I've got to agree that $1500 might be a little high if it doesn't run, roll and has a rusted frame and bulkhead. That leaves body panels and seats (also likely to be gone) so is an assembled pile of body panels with $1500-hard call to make but the pics should help us. If all of those items are gone the build cost could get up there as well and that needs to be considered in the purchase. He does have the freedom to get creative with the power train which can be good. Helping someone else find a series is almost as much fun as I had finding mine-maybe even better as it's their money!:ylsmoke:

The Series belongs to my brother-in-law and he lives in Charlotte. I just got off the phone with him and he isn't sure what shape the bulkhead is in, its been a hot min since he has even looked at it. He is pretty sure the axles are rusted up. I am going to look at it on Sunday after Christmas. It would be an awesome ride!!

I would just buy the 68 that is for sale here and be done with it.

It sound like you'll have more into the one your looking at when it's
all said and done.

Just my 2 cents...........
