Possible 60 buy?

You'll have to forgive me, I'm currently deployed in Iraq, and the internet quality is less than ideal, so while I've researched a little on this forum about 60's, I'm pretty limited on time/availability on the internet.

As my signature states, I currently have an XJ and a TJ... Love Jeeps. Love I6's (had a couple ford 300's in the past as well.) So a little background:

4 days before deploying we found out that my wife was pregnant! While I am extremely excited, the convenience factor of timing has caught me a little bit off guard. We picked up the Cherokee a few months ago so we'd have a "family vehicle", the Miata she was driving doesn't exactly have room for 3, not to mention by now she wouldn't be able to fit in it! So I've given it to my mom to have a fun sporty Florida summer fun car!

I truly love my TJ. 2004, I6, 32's, electric lime green, hard top, tube bumpers, and only 60k miles. But... It's not exactly made for 2+ a baby, and I still owe about $10k on it. That being said, I don't think I'd have a problem selling it for $11-12k as it sits. But I do love my jeep, have wanted one ever since I was a little kid, and purchased it only 4 months before deploying... So I've only put about 3k miles on it since I've owned it...

I've recently found an '85 60 on CL with 258k miles for $2500. The owner claims only real rust spots are over the rear fender wells, and that the engine is running rich (suspectedly because the previous owner lived in Colorado... not sure the validity of that?) But the owner's description sounds honest. It has a recently rebuilt front end (steering) new carb and smog pump, and new 5 new 33" tires. He claims that it starts the first time every time, and that it runs and drives nice. Sounds like a decent deal to me, but I figured I'd ask the LC enthusiasts for a better opinion.

While I can "afford" to purchase it, and keep the Jeep... I'd feel much more comfortable alleviating the debt load, and lessening insurance.

So some questions:
Does it sound like it's worth the $2.5k?
Does an engine with 258k and "running rich" sound like it would last another couple years, or would it more than likely need a rebuild sooner than that?
How hard are 350 + a/t swaps? is it as simple as motor mounts, tranny, transfer, and driveshafts? (most likely I'd go TBI or carb)
What kind of fuel mileage should I expect from the 4.2 with 33"s and looks to be some sort of mild lift?
I will for the most part be purchasing sight unseen through my wife... and though I've thought her a little about maintenance, she's still learning... and has a long ways to go with inspecting vehicles, etc. (not to mention she's about to pop, so crawling under is a no go.) are there any LC related issues I should ask the owner?

Thanks!

Keeping looking .....$2.5k in this market is high with all those miles on her. I think if you had $2.5K to burn on a 60 you could find one with less miles and rust free for that amount of money.

Gas mileage depents on how your 60 is maintained. I have heard people over on mud get between 12 to 17 mpg.....

A 350 swap doesn't seem to hard if you have the time and money.

Good luck and stay safe!

Thanks for what you do!

if its running rich don't expect great mileage. Also an '85 will not have shoulder belts in the back so keep that in mind for the kids.

if it is rusty make sure to pull up the carpet where the rear seats mount as that is a common rust spot. I have seen rear seats completely rusted loose and the previous owner did not know it and had kids belted in back there!

Good luck with your purchase!

Tell us all where you are at, and maybe somebody LC savvy can take a look for you as well. Also, if you are set on a 60, check the classifieds on here as well as ih8mud. If you are looking for something family friendly consider on FJ80, or FZJ80, if you are looking for a project 60 PM me. Ultimately, if you are looking for something to drive when you step off the plane safely home, look in the SW region, reduced rust is a big plus in these old trucks. Good luck, be safe, and let us know how we can help.

As stated above, have one of the local guys from a land cruiser club look it over. I think the 62 has rear shoulder belts, so that may be an option as well, especially if you are planning on an AT swap anyway. If you love the I6, why bother with the SBC?
Stay safe.

Thanks for the replies.

Fowldarr, I am looking for a family friendly, drivable vehicle in need of some cosmetic, maybe minor mechanical work for a reasonable price. I was looking at the 60's in general as I like the more nostalgic look they have. (and round headlights)

Klierslc, Yes, I love the I6s, but if a new motor were neaded (instead of rebuild) then I'd be looking towards a SBC for more power (and a/t so the Mrs could drive it).

Realistically, you can find a pretty clean one for 2.5k, but most do have higher miles on them. I bought mine with the idea of transplanting a V8 in it, it's got 290,000 miles and still runs (though right now the batt is dead, it's in primer, has an exhaust manifold leak, PS pump leak...you get the idea). So, it will either get a transplant, or sold to somebody that wants to pick up a project. Personally, I'll move back to an FZJ80 when the time is right, I love the nostalgic looks of the 60, but to get a 60 to where an 80 is as far as family friendly, reliable, and comfort, you are lookign at spending much more. And the look of the 80 is kind of grocery getter mall cruiser until you get it up a few inches, some slightly bigger tires, snorkel, roof rack, custom bumpers....oh wait, there went our budget again...

I too am looking at FJ60s again. I've found a couple in my area for less than 3500. One with and OME lift and a 350 conversion (carbbed=yuck) and a couple others that are pretty close to stock.

all my buddies keep saying that TBI is the way to go

Good point. I'd be all about a nice little TBI setup with a MegaSquirt or something of the sort... If I ended up with an engine rebuild.

I'm also considering a Pirate Build, too, after seeing a lot of things that I would like, just not in the same "Package" or price-range.

I found a good looking FJ62 in my area yesterday evening. It is sitting in a mechanic's yard. The "story" is that the original owner passed away and his nephew inherited the truck. Nephew brings it to mechanic to get it checked out and tuned up. Nephew went through divorce and is now hurting for money. Nephew will take $1500 for the truck.

Like I said, it looks good, but it has been sitting for over a month and the battery was dead. Mechanic claims it runs and drives just fine, he's unbiased and "doesnt know" the owner. 176,000 miles. Stock. Clean engine compartment, a little bit of an oil leak around the oil pan gasket. Only one little spot of rust on front fender. Smoked inside-- blah-- but clean otherwise. Two tone, dark gray and silver.

Going to get it on Wednesday or Thursday.:sombrero:

Here is one that looks similar (paint scheme).
