Jason, I love the storage/sleeping platform system!!

Thanks, I am really happy with the way it has turned out.

Bravo, it looks like you have built a great rig.:luxhello:

It has fixed more problems than I thought I even had!! I have a couple of refinements to add before it's finished (I don't think these things are ever truly finished!!) but here are the final few photos:

12v cabling is now finished, I have taken a 50 amp feed to the fuse box and then extended it to a 50amp Anderson plug at the rear to allow me to plug in the 12v microwave when needed.

I have also added the charger so the 240v system is now completed and working

I also extended a 175amp Anderson point to the front wing to provide a jump start point, this is isolated near the battery box to prevent issues, I have a boot and cover to add to the plug.

The shelf has been secured by thumb screws for easy deployment.

Just a quick question, im getting ready to start building a drawer system for my jeep xj. I was wondering what would be the best to bolt it to the body. I just wanted to hear what others have done thanks.

If you go back through this thread and look at pics, people have come up with tie down solutions to avoid bolting the box down.

Cross posting from my build thread in the Land Rover section (Coyote...) but pertinent to this one as well. Like many I've taken inspiration from this thread. My application is a Discovery 1. Endstate was to have a fairly light but stout shelf/storage system that maximized the utility of the rear cargo setup both for daily usage as well as for offroading. I wanted to retain the rear ac b/c my kids love it and it does help cool the space off considerably faster. I liked the usage of pelican cases for tools and in this case recovery gear. I wanted to have more static storage for spares and some survival gear. Door space was utilized for a fold down table, fire extinguisher, ratchet straps, and a preliminary first aid kit (trauma). Sides have powertank & associated air tools/tire repair on the passenger side. Driver's side has a larger first aid kit.

Some pics:

More details in the other thread, but happy to tap in more here if desired. Many thanks to those that posted beforehand, some of these setups are superb.

Hey guys,

This is still a work in progress but very happy how it turned out so far! Trying to make a decent camper out of this beast isn't easy but it's coming together. I mostly used 1/2" plywood, light and strong and avoided the use of carpet at all price, hate that stuff with a passion! instead I used some HD rubberized tiles, gears don't slide on this, easy to clean... For handles I simply used some webbing. It's light and collapse flat to maximize draws length. It's also easy to use with gloves or mitts in the winter and is dirt cheap.

The goal was to eliminate as much wasted space as possible so none of those beefy sliding tracks for the draws... I'm using Teflon coated poly strips instead. I also wanted to get access from the front or top along with sliding boards/tables and be able to use the "Laurel" drawer without opening both doors. Here's how it turned out, I called it the "Laurel & Hardy draws"

Now if I slide the top it acts as a table and gives me access from the top or rear... I'm adding a build up picture as well.

It's pretty strong but I should have used 3/4" for the "Hardy" table...

My truck came with a factory Taco/sandwich holder... ;-)

And how I built it...

Draws

And now the bedding...
I built a platform to install a bench that can either face front or rear by simply flipping the back rest. When I slide the bench to the most rear it gives plenty of legroom but slide it to the front and flip the backrest and you end up maximizing your living area with the draws acting as a table. And my batteries are now hidden under the bench. I still need to build a false floor for storage.

The bench also folds down to become part of the bed!

It might be hard to see but I have a raised storage area against the wall, nice and deep. I'll make another one on the other side but it will go up to the ceiling with a roof console at the most back. Similar to the VW bus...

Nicely done. How did you attached the Teflon strips to the supporting plywood strip? They seem pretty thin for countersunk screws to work.

I simply sanded one side of the strips and used PL400 construction adhesive. For the aluminum I used Sika and screws. Both aren't moving!

I just came back with my truck for a month on the road, attended to the Overland Expo and a quick drop to GoneMoab. I had both my young boys with me, good time! The drawers were filled with all the usuals gears, food, tools... and they worked perfectly even when heavily loaded. The sliding tables came very handy, especially when cooking!

Cheers

hmmm...What to build?

So I've been thinking of starting a storage set up for the back of my new to me 91 XJ. While down at the local on post recycle center here in Germany I stumbled across a bunch of aluminum brackets and channel. Pics don't really show very well but most of it has slots or holes like tie town type channels.?. Anyway... after a quick dive in ye old dumpster I ended up with as much of this as I could fit in my car. I'm not really sure how any of this may come together to help build the storage area but stay tuned. And feel free to offer ideas. :)
Also grabbed up a bunch of brand new grade 8 hardware some moron threw away! About 60lbs of 1/2-9/16s bolts, washers, nuts, etc. All this was free too. :)

That's a fact! And since the tiny paycheck trumps pride everyday of the week, why not? haha! Here are a couple other thing's I've found lately. :)
