Went to see the low mikes and it was rough. No receipts...everything was great until I showed them it wasn't (windows, rear door, moon roof, etc..)..the guys just seemed shady too.

Keep on looking !!

I did find one...but it is at a used car dealership here in Dallas.

95 SR
157K
$2499 (will probably move on the price)

Have yet to go see it in person. Thoughts on buying from a used car dealer? I only have the stereotypical view of them (scam artists), but have never actually dealt with one. They have sent me the carfax report (attached) to review and there only seems to have been 4 owners, located here in TX and had a problem getting emissions past, but finally did.

Worth looking at in person if near you, Carfax doesn't list service history very well. Need to find out if there is proof of Timing Belt, tensioner, water pump replacement lately. this is a 60K miles PM item. Should have been done before, otherwise will need to be first on your agenda. At a dealer - maybe $1k for the job. (negotiating point)

Thanks PLH. Already stated they have no idea on maintenance, so I was thinking of spending a $100 and getting a mobile inspection guy over to give it an inspection prior to purchase. Has anyone used one of these services before or have you relied on your own knowledge?

I wouldn't spend the $100, but that is me. I know my way around vehicles enough, and for sure around Monteros more than the "mobile" guy does.

PLH....too bad you don't live in Milwaukee, TX. Would be buying you beer and as many brats as you could eat....on second thought it might be cheaper with the mobile guy...:friday:

Just look for leaks, rust, smoke from the engine or exhaust and that it drives and shifts ok when cold and warmed up.

They are pretty bullet proof. And parts are decently cheap too.

I also never buy from small time dealers, if it was a trade I would consider it at a bigger one, but there is no telling when it goes through the auction what all is wrong with it.

I went to check the 95 with 157K at the dealer and it was clean. Issues I saw were as follows;

Check Engine Light - Didn't have a code reader and they said that they didn't have one that worked on it.
Smoking at start - Cleared after a bit (rev up to 2500 RPM and water came out of the pipe)
Some smoke after driving under drivers area from the chassis...couldn't run it down

Here are some pics I took (I haven't seen a Monty and the dash lights regarding 4x4, but it seemed to engage). Can anyone give me a clue as to the dashboard lights specifically the green wheels)

The wheels light up to indicate 4WD or 2WD. Oddly, the two on the left side are burnt out (typically the rear wheel lights burn out since they are on whenever the vehicle is). The box in the middle is the indicator for the center differential lock and the rear diff will light up orange when the locker is engaged. If you can get it cheap enough, it might be worth it, but it'd have to be pretty cheap with an unknown CEL.

Thanks Eric M. I searched for a schematic to show that it should light up like, but to no avail.
