Make sure its a TRD so you have a locker. Other than that, if that's what you want go for it. Will it limit where you can go? Maybe, only you know that since you didn't state what you want to do with it.

I have a prerunner TRD and its built for the desert. I have the locker but the truck is long traveled. I'm sure it would struggle on a lot of steep rocky or loose terrain but its a champ otherwise. Throw a winch on there and you're golden as long as you've got something to hook to.

I don't think that 2wd is really a hinderance for "expedition use" ........expedition use, at least viewing the threads on here seems to be mostly forest roads or other dirt roads not really stuff like the Rubicon.

Some of the best trips I've taken were in a 2wd Ford Ranger that I owned from 1999 -2003. One of the best "road trip" vehicles I ever owned.

I think people would really be shocked at what you can do in 2wd, I've purposely kept my 4runner in 2wd at times to see what I could get through and its astonishing. but when you have 4wd and you know its there u seem to always have it on when in the dirt and not think twice. The biggest difference I think between a locked 2wd and an unlocked 4wd is that 4lo give you a much better crawl ratio than a 2wd ever could.

I have a somewhat built 2wd tacoma, I put in a locker, added some icon c/o, camburg UCA, Dakar leaf springs, added a leaf to that... I just finished the mojave road, I have been all over the Idylwild area, and the central coast mountains, been through sand and up some steep rocks, I kind of view 4x4 as a way out. I am convinced beyond a reasonable doubt, that I have more offroad miles than a majority of the shiny fancy looking 4x4s I see driving around town. HOWEVER, I would like to convert to 4x4, sell my truck? HECK NO! I love it.

With good tires, and a good driver, you can go ALMOST anywhere.

Thread revival . New guy here with a 2008 Tacoma Prerunner. I'm trying to decide what would be best for my truck to make it more expedition worthy. It's a TRD OR V6 so thats 2WD with a locker in the rear. I'm thinking either Maxtrac spindles and Dakars in rear with shocks or OME all the way atound with coilovers. No wanting to be lifted more than 2"-3" and would like to have a good/better ride quality. Anyone have any thoughts? Thankyou in advance.

Prerunner - as in the toyota truck? Looks good. Drives good, maybe not be the best platform to begin, but still good.

Prerunner, as in a style of truck. HELL YEAH! :smiley_drive: Although I feel like a 4x4 prerunner is the best of both worlds for the application you mentioned. (Although I may be biased ;) )
