I've used bread in plumbing work to stop up a copper waterline, so I could solder in a new 'T' or replace a cracked section, etc. It will block the residual water in the line after the main valve is shut off, and and then dissolve after the repair is made and allow the water to flow again. You can speed up the process by heating the area where the bread is using your torch, and it will dissipate quicker.
