Damn!! Someone caught me prototyping a new soccer mom cat house!! Got to pay for them dance and piano lessons somehow. I love prototyping in cardboard and duct tape. Can cut directly from the templates.

What you can't see is the 600 watts of roof solar and the built in shower. Interior will be complete with shag carpet walls and mini disco balls. Vent is for the wine cooler fridge that every soccer mom needs.

The inline 6 budget just went out the window. It was supposed to be cheap but updating the starter just bit me hard. Originally the motor used an inertia starter. The drawback with that design is when the starter goes out, it can get locked in the retracted position. That means it is clamped to the flywheel and very difficult to remove. You have to go in from the back side, through a hole in the bell housing, and remove the gear from the shaft. The later style starter is called "positive engagement." Napa showed a positive engagement starter that would fit on the 223 so I special ordered one. It doesn't fit. The bolt pattern is the same but the nose cone hits the bell housing. To top it off, the gear is the wrong diameter and pitch. I called Napa tech support and they don't know anything, so disappointing. The only solution is to go to a modern race type starter. A major quality upgrade, but also expen$ive.

Inertia starter on top, positive engagement on bottom.

Modern Powermaster starter without the nose cone that interferes with the bell housing. Powermaster tech support was AWSOME! they had it sorted out in minutes!

Here is where the nose cone hits the bell housing; where those inner bolt holes are located.

It's always the little details that get in the way. Glad you figured it out. Sometimes the big chain auto parts can be so aggravating. "I know your computer system doesn't show it, but I got the part right here in my hand and it came out of the truck!" "Nope, sorry sir that can't be the right part...." The minute you go to a dedicated company that only deals with the component you're looking for you get an answer in 5 mins. :ROFLMAO:

I've used powermaster alternators for years. I really didn't think about their starters until I got hung up on this. Finding good automotive advice is not easy anymore. People in general don't seem to be curious or want to engage in problem solving anymore. It's sad.

Lot's of "Mechanics" nowadays are just part changers. There's no trouble-shooting involved whatsoever. That's why when I find a good one I tend to give him/her all my business.
