Project "Full Restoration" 1983 Mitsubishi Turbo Diesel 4x4

Did you ever post updated pictures of your rig on another thread?

It has all been finalized. I am flying out to Socal to pickup the truck this Friday. I will post up some pics next weekend. I was hoping it would be ready for the Presidents Day Run this weekend but it was not in the cards. Mike had to sort a few things before it was ready. The truck needed all the hydraulics to hooked up. The headlight switch was only working intermittently and all the fender liners needed to replaced. Just little things. Big props to Mike Warme on completing the restoration. I will get this truck out of his hair so he can start on the next restoration project.

My plans for the truck are very basic:

-CB
-Bed Rack
-RTT mounted over the bed
-Removable drawer system

This truck will be used for mild expedition use. It will be used to travel long distances here in the intermountain west because it gets excellent MPG's. I will also use it for attending group runs and attending various car shows here and there with my little boy.

After a short flight and then a long drive home, the truck safely made it back to Utah. The original owner asked me to post a Youtube video of his handy work because he is media challenged so I attached the link. All I can say is wow. This truck has tons of power. I did 80mph the whole way home from SoCal. It had no issues going up the big mountain passes and comfortably passed cars at freeway speeds. This will make a great overland vehicle.

What MPG did you get on the return trip?...My first vehicle was a Dodge D-50 / Plymouth Arrow gasoline 2wd. The D-50 was free w/cracked head and the Arrow was $50...Great little truck.

Glad you saved one!

I got about 26mpg but I was driving at 80mph. As the engine breaks in and at lower speeds I am sure those figures will only go up.

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
Nice! i wish i could afford a full resto on an old mitsu, one day...

Excellent Job as usual.

I have been driving "Lil Brown" for a few weeks now and I am just impressed with how much power this little engine has. I purchased the Hyundia/Kia version of the 4D56(D4BF) 2.5L Turbo Diesel and had it installed. This engine is noticeably more powerful than the 4D55 2.3 Turbo Diesel engine. The new Hyundai 4D56 engine is rated at 84 HP @ 4200rpm and 145 ft. lbs torque @ 2000rpm. I was able to get some dyno numbers and the engine is actually producing 94 HP @ 3200rpm and 198 ft lbs of torque @ 2000rpm. Just as I suspected, This little diesel is torque monster. Not only is this engine making a lot more power but the power band is much better than advertised. From my dyno experience, the 4D55 makes 80 HP @ 4200rpms and 130 ft lbs torque @ 2900rpms.

Impressive HP/Torque numbers and such a clean rig although I'm not sure what that errant box is in the last picture. Very unlike you to have something just laying about if you ask me. ;)

It's a Gen I Montero SWB rear speaker.

It's true. It's a door speaker. They used to put the speakers in the doors on these pickups but that caused the doors to leak water and moister into the door panels. When they would install the the speaker the manufacturer would cut through the moisture barrier that sealed the door. Then the door panels would warp and curl. The solution is it keep the door completely sealed by not puncturing the moisture barrier and install speakers under the dash. That big gray speaker is my temporary solution until I figure out what I want to do. I think I will just install some small speakers up and under the dash. Nothing to fancy.

Again, that is such a nice truck Spence. If you don't mind me asking, what was the end cost for your basically brand new 1983 Mighty Max?
