Project Super Lux Safari Vehicle

Hello EXPO!

I work for a 5 star resort in Jackson Wyoming which I wont mention the name here but you guys can probably figure it out. I work there as the Resort Naturalist essentially taking our guests on 4-5 hour sunrise and sunset wildlife viewing tours throughout Grand Teton National Park. We currently use a Mercedes GL450. These are nice cars, quiet, luxurious, reliable. BUUUUT they are just not big enough nor do they have low range gearing. Not to mention people have been getting carsick in the third row and you have to be a contortionist just to get back there.

We need something different.

I have been given the task of finding/creating a vehicle that would satisfy our AND more importantly our guests needs. I have been given a budget of $100,000. First off I will explain what our requirements are.
1. MUST be luxurious, leather seats, quiet etc.
2. MUST seat 6 people without having to fold down seats. I.e. easy access.
3. MUST have low range
4. MUST be stone axe reliable
5. MUST have roof openings so as to view wildlife.
6. MUST be safe.
7. MUST have room for gear.

Here is what we CANNOT have.
1. NO vans
2. NO diesels (too loud)

The ideal seating configuration would be a bench in the third row position and two captains chairs in the second row to allow easy entry and exit. We have LOTS of gear with us all the time, spotting scopes, camera equip., food, coffee pots, specimen case, first aid, recovery gear, etc. In the new vehicle we would like to have a small fridge for drinks and built in drawers for all the gear. Storing some of the gear on the roof is an option though not ideal as we would like an unobstructed view.

The vehicle we need does not exist in stock form so let your imagination run wild, the only limit is the $100k.

I thank you in advance for your ideas....kind regards.

From what you describe, why not a GM Suburban or Ford Excursion (gasoline)? On the smaller side, you can get a 1st Generation Toyota Sequoia with captains chairs in the 2nd row without mandating access change and decent visibility out the 3rd row.

Pretty sure with your budget you'd be able to meet two units.

why no vans? a diesel sprinter is stupid quiet, great mileage, and will hold more people and gear. also, the big side slider will be the easiest access possible. plus it has a huge side that you can get a big company wrap for it.

past that, i agree with the excursion.

I guess four seasons...

G-wagon and put two rear facing seats in the cargo area, put the gear in pelican type cases on the roof.

Seems like a van would be ideal, the sprinter idea or maybe a custom sportsmobile.

Yeah, go with that one, only NOT PINK!

Head down to Ouray Colorado, and check out the jeep companies. Most of them drive (for the tours) a Chevy or a Dodge 1/2 ton, and they do amazing on the trails. Obviously you can do what they did, and then punch it up a bit to get the luxury you are looking for.

Otherwise just pick up a couple of MLs and drive those. They do REALLY well off road, and are really very comfortable doing it. (Ask me how I know)

Obviously you would need two drivers, but it also means you have a nice set up for a rescue vehicle if one manages to get stuck. Beyond that you should get yourself a nice kitchen set up in the back of whatever you do buy. Get one with all the drawers etc. Then you can cater nicely to the folks on the trip, and house the gear in a neat orderly fashion.

Because most other Wildlife companys in the area use modified vans. We want something different that really stands out. Sprinters have 4x4?

Diesel sprinters are not that quiet. I used one for work and I could barely hear people through the drive-through speaker without turning off the engine.
