So the antenna for the radio was kinda all wobbly on the fender so naturally I took it apart. As I was playing with it I dropped the wire and connector down the hole in the fender..... :smilies27Problem solved I guess!

Favorite seats are 87-89 4runner sr5 buckets. Replaced a couple of benches with these before. They are definitely different than the pre 87 and better support than post 89, imho.

Ok so I have been scouring the internet for decent bumpers. Why the arb is 1000 bucks for a 30 yo truck is beyond me. All the rock crawler types and plate bumper just look too.... meh. So I think I am going to need to fabricate one. I know I said I wouldn't but I think for what I want it will be necessity. As for the rear I think a run of the mill all pro with a home built swing out will fit the bill. In the mean time here is the whiteboard! Just scratchings and a list.

So I got into the blue beast the other day after a hard rain and it smelled horribly like mold. I sniffed around and found the whole passenger side carpet soaked. The carpet was hashed anyway so I ripped it out and found the water was coming from up by the computer box. I pulled the fender off thinking the intake gutter was clogged with pine needles but I found that the bulk head hole for the harness was all reamed out. Like someone took a can opener to it!

Well I'll fix that and look for a new seat tomorrow and see what I can dig up.

Love this truck! The 1st and 2nd gen Toy pickups with the regular cabs are my favorite body styles. Add in the aluminum topper and classic aluminum rims and it just oozes cool! Looking forward to seeing what you do with it. Hope you keep the Rad 80's feel.

I'm hoping to keep the 80s feel for a while. I like em' too, but some rust issues might hinder it a bit. I really need to tear into it and get it up to snuff. I should be able to get a seat for it here soon.

Well Christmas is the season I hate because I work in logistics, but the pay checks are nice. SO hopefully I will be able to get tires and the timing chain fixed. More posts to come soon I hope.

Well the budget got new shoes! And today I am going to order the suspension. I was originally going to go with 285/75r16s. After some deliberation I found out the rims were 15s and all they had in stock was 33/12.5r 15 s oh well! Plus it was cheaper. $1000.00 out the door mounted and balanced. Discount tire in Auburn by the outlet collection is awesome. To get them to fit there was some minor fender trimming. It was on the inner fender with the wheel at full lock. It would rub the pinch right there so I smashed that over and used an angle grinder to take off a couple inches on the bottom inner fender lip where the fender cowl attaches. Nothing serious. Also hacked off a chunk of the fender cowl. I'll re patch that with something later down the road. I will probably get repro fenders and make something a bit nicer. These are all creased and dented anyway.
Oh and it needed a starter plunger at $32

TOTAL: $4022.28

Not too shobby for a truck as old as me.

The truck has had some work done. It now has a midland hand held cb with tuned external antenna and the suspension has been ordered. But of course I changed jobs AGAIN, so now the project is waylaid again. Have no fear though it will have mods soon enough.

Cool thread! I just bought a ' 90 Xtra cab for $1500 and it has one month old KM2s on it. That makes it a $500 truck more or less. I'm going to be doing as "modestly priced" a build as possible too. Probably a bunch of maintenance stuff, and maybe a bit of fun stuff.
Why the hatred of the 3.0 (aside from no power, crap fuel economy and head gasket woes)? The truck I bought has the 3.sl0w, but the heads have recently been done. Anything I should be looking at? I'm usually a 22RE kind of guy.

Whoa...that's a lot of tire!

I figured out that 1st-gen Subaru Impreza seats almost match the bolt holes (in the 4runner at least) and they're pretty comfy.

Expanding foam in a can works well for plugging holes.

Redthies--from what I've heard, the 3VZ-E isn't all that bad. It's just more complex and not that great of a performer for its weight and fuel consumption. Lots of folks like them, though. Make sure to stay on top of timing belt replacement.
