pulling backwards

For my dream Jeep, I've been planning on using one of those winch carriers that allows the winch to be mounted on hitch receivers on either the front or back.

However, a Land Rover I used to drive for work had a hole through the back bumper, with a tube running at least part of the way forward. I was told it was for routing the front-mounted winch out the back. Now I wish I had checked it out when I had the chance...

I can imagine a load of problems trying to route a front-mounted winch out the back, like tangling the cable up in the driveline. I also would be concerned about putting the load on the top of the spool, rather than the bottom, when the winch is probably not designed for that. So I’m here to ask the experts…

I'd be interested in hearing details of ways to set up a vehicle such that a front-mounted winch could pull the vehicle backwards.

Mounting Hardware?

Hello Lynn:

Aside from the routing problems associated with getting a relatively directional pull from the drum to the rear bumper, you might need to take a close look at how the front mounted winch attached to the bumper. On my front mounted winch (M8000 on a 2nd generation TJM-17 bumper) the hardware holding the winch to the bumper appears designed only for holding the winch to the bumper against relatively moderate forces. The higher forces associated with a winch-pull are compression forces against the bumper. When the winch is working the fasteners holding the winch to the mount are not bearing much load since the winch is being pulled against the bumper.

In your proposed application the winch would be pulled away from the bumper to the rear. This could require a completely different size and grade of fastner to avoid problems.

In attempting to answer my own question, I have ran across a couple of web sites that talk about mid-mounting a winch such that the cable can be directed out either end. Looks like a lot of trouble, though.

And, yes, I do know that the best option for rear pulling is probably the winch on your buddies vehicle... ;)

This is a great system!!!! I got it all from Warn.

I just got a trailer making it hard for the winch to pull from the rear.

I'm thinking about selling my system if anybody is interested.....(winch w/carrier and all the Warn cables...would fit any rig)

Thanks. Like I said in my opening post, that's exactly what I have planned for my Jeep (someday).

However, I am also (someday even further away) planning on building a bigger rig (camper) and will need a large winch that I won't be able to move around.

Sorry I didn't say that part up-front.
