G'day All, here are a few shots of my new Ford Ranger ute. For those not in the know, it's Ford's "global" midsize truck built in Thailand (as are many of our cars now) but with a ton of Australian, South African and other R&D input. It's a similar concept to VW's Amarok and competes against the Toyota HiLux, Nissan Navara and other utes from Mitsu, Isuzu etc. Mine is the base model, 2.2 diesel (same as the current Land Rover Defender models), six speed manual which comes very well loaded with safety, traction and comfort items. It's my first ute/ pickup after several Subarus, a Jeep Wrangler CRD and a Ford Territory. I'm mighty happy so far: it is a lot like the Jeep to drive but far more comfortable and carries a heap more gear, needless to say.
Simple mods so far are an ARB compressor and rear Airlocker, Uniden compact 80 channel UHF, Baja Dually-type compact LEDs as auxilliary lighting, BFG KM2 tyres (245/75 LT16) and a few extra load hold-down points and a tonneau cover for the bed. Future mods may include a snorkel, rear bar and tinted widows before summer. The vehicle gets used for lots of back-roads commuting (some of the pics are just off my work route), camping trips and hauling dirt bikes. Its first big trip will be to the Central Australian deserts in September this year.
