Question about Reg cab taco's with 5 spd and rear locker?

While reading in an early issue of Toyota 4wd owner, the one with the "history lesson" in it about all the Toyota 4wds, I was reading about the Tacos. It said that in 96 the Reg cab came with an available off road package that included a rear locker. I know that 96 'Runners came with a few options such as lockers or 4:88 gears (with a 4:88 specific carrier) but I have never heard of a Reg cab taco that came with a rear locker. let me know any info you might have.
Thanks and happy holidays

I have personally never seen a 96' Tacoma with a factory installed e-locker, though I do know of several with 97's that had the OE locker (dmc here on ExPo had an e-locked 97'). TRD didn't start until 98' and of course all had the e-locker thereafter.

I have never heard of such a thing in a regular cab. If it exists, I'd love to see one. The offroad pkg wasn't even offered in 1996. I believe the offroad pkg came out in 1998, possibly 1999, (same year 1st prerunner was offfered). I cannot say with absolute certainty, but I believe this to be correct. Good luck.

96-98ish tacoma reg cab lockers

Years ago I attended the Mile High Jeep Club All-4-Fun and there was a friend of a friend at the event that had one, I thought it was super cool! He told me then it was a rare option in that particular year. It wheeled really well and I think they drove from Indiana for the event, so it was comfortable across country.
- the driver was a friend of a friend but I actually saw the locker on the rear axle and the switch while we were in camp.

Love to find one today, but I don't really need a two seater. Our Double cab works like a champ.

Good question...as i'm pretty certain it was an optional component, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to get it with the 4 cyl.

That is a good question though for what its worth I have never seen a 4cyl truck/4Runner with the optional locker, always the 6cyl.

Anyone seen a factory installed e-locker in a 4 cyl truck?
