question to all LR owners

You guys have all got it soooo WRONG!!!

Sorry... And you all know why..

ANY Land Rover with a Live axle up front is just plain cooler than anything else out there.

More capable... Well most times..

Reliable? Maybe pre D2..

Being able to buy a Luxury SUV and actually make it work off road for any length of time.. Yeah Probably...

Expense? Not bad...

But.....

Cool points? Higher than anything on the planet.

Rivaled only by stuff we just can't get here....

I love my Rovers (all five) leaves or coils.

Is there anything that says "Expedition" more than a Landy? What did Marlin Perkins use to feed Steve to the African Critters with? And Daktari? Perentie's? Cool.. The Real SAS? Awsome!

Prior to LR's move into the LUXUTE market we all still benifitted from this legacy of the Dreams of Maurice Wilks! This can only be rivaled by the Jeep (sorry but it's true) and Jeep, although whored to the max has still managed to maintain a vehicle that is a true evolution of the original "perfect" off road vehicle.

Sad to say A TJ is a true decendent of an MB..

A new Range Rover or LR3 although cool is not even close to what Maurice had in mind... That ended with the D2...

My Vote for a true Landy that will take you everywhere?
ANY Leafer S1/2/3 Second to the best!
Want a bit more comfort?
A 1970-94 RRC or the 1992-1995 in a D1.. 1996- 99 D1 still work well but require a more Technical person that is not afraid of the lack of a Dizzy.

The Ulitimate? Get a Defender and love it... and get the diesel...
Of course you'll pay through the nose.. There's a reason for that..

Rant of course, and the opinion is purely my own. Given a choice for a DD + Off road hero I'd chose a Series over an LR3 any day and a Deefer over all else...

Keith, that brought a tear to my eye. I actually went out and hugged my LR:)
I think I will now too.

All good points. I bought a 95 D1 for the 7 seat option. I didn't want another van, everybody has a Tahoe, Suburban, Expedition, Excursion, etc. It came down to the D1 and the 80 series LC. Obviously I went with the LR, now I have 3. When I got a 91 Rangie to play around with, my wife sold her van and took over the D1. Now she wants a D2 for herself, the sickness spread through the house. The kids love them and fight over who gets to ride in the jumpseats,

I don't know that I'll ever not have a Rover, just my .02.

I think Keith retty much touched on why people buy and keep (if they're the right kind of person) Land Rovers- the image and history associated with the marque. People buy Jeeps for the very same reason, even though some models were rated pretty low for reliability as well. There's a certain feeling you get when you drive a vehicle like that that can't be provided by most of the vehicles on the road today. Land Rover used to heavily market that image in the states, and back it up with publicized events that proved their point. It will be very difficult to rebuild that image in credibility in the minds of the off-road crowd here without a major design philosophy change, if it's even possible. If they brought the Defender to the States at a price somewhat similar to a loaded Jeep Unlimited, you might see a real change in the perception of the marque as more and more hit the roads and trails.

Until then, you'll probably see more and more Chevy 4.3L Disco 1 conversions.

Wow, so much emotion in this thread!! :ylsmoke:

Which tells you everything. You should ask the same Q over in the Toy forum and see what goes down . . .

And yes, IMO a Defender is the one. I have beaten the hell out of mine and it has done everything I have asked of it. And I maintain it religiously. I did get hit by the build quality gremlin in Africa when the transmission gave out after 19,000km from new. Best we can determine is that someone didn't install the drive key for the oil pump in the R380. So it went for 19,000km with no oil getting to the main shaft. Now THAT is tough!! And it didn't leave us stranded. The drain plug looked like a fur ball, but the truck made it to where we could source a new transmission. And I think it would have gone a lot further if we had pushed it.

And you can see from the pic I was pretty upset about the whole thing!

cheers

Time will tell, but I think the D1 is destined to be a classic similar to the original FJ, yet even more rare. While not as styled as the Defender it has the combination of comfort, amenities and function.

Keith hit it on the head. Yeah, I hated my Rangie, but loved it too. Two great days: One when I bought it, one when I sold hit.

Great photos, Graham.

Post 'em up. Land Rover break-downs and repairs.

Ahhh repairs... So much easier if taken care of before you leave the driveway...

Myself and Nick replace serpentine belt, notice my hood open to confirm the routing, we both now have a small diagram drawn on our radiators.

I've got a spider gear and pin from a Disco as an ornament on my workbench to serve as a reminder if I ever have the urge to go British.

That photograph is priceless. "How many LR owners does it take to change a spark plug?"

Hehe.

On that trip alone (8000 miles) I changed the following:

Ignition module
Fuel pump (in the tank, of course)
1 bank of injectors
Two fuel filters
Coil
Throttle position sensor
Rear diff

I sold the truck after that trip.

Awesome photos. I've got a broken spider gear on my desk at work.

Still drive Land Rovers, but they have Toyota center diffs in them now!

Is it just me, or does that diff look very dry???
