I live on the east coast, just north of philadelphia. I love reading all of these expedition write ups and looking at all the pics, they are unreal. My questions is this. Are there any places on the east coast to have a little fun like you all do on the west coast? I have never done anything like this before and would love to try. Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Not sure if you have checked out MaoriExpeditions posts but he details some travels on the east coast that made me want to head for the eastern shores

Howdy Neighbor. :wavey:

My fav in the NE is Maine's North Woods with it's miles and miles of logging roads and secluded camping it offers. Check out Baxter SP and Allagash Wilderness. New Hampshires White's and Vermont's Green Mountains are also worth mention if you have never visited.

There are quite a few places within our state worth visiting as well. St. Mary's, Wellsboro areas come to mind.

Theres also a nice trip report here on Nova Scotia and Labrador which has me wanting to go back.

Welcome to Expo.

Check out Sproul State Forest in north central PA, many miles of dirtroads and primitive camping by permit. Also Bald Eagle and RothRock State Forests have great roads for exploring but no camping. South west of you is the Monogahela Nation Forest in WV. These are all with in 2-4 hours of Philly.:)

Welcome to ExPo!

What kind of travel are you into? Driving till you get stuck or break? Historical research? Hunting/fishing? Photography? The Pine Barrens have all of this, depending on who you travel with. I'm assuming since you are posting on this forum that breaking the truck is not your goal. Treading lightly is something you will hear a lot here too.

I don't know about PA, but pick up a copy of John Beck's "Forgotten Towns" and a good Topo map of the Pines and you will be off and running on the research side of expeditions. Many of these towns have been reduced to barely visable cellar holes, and others are restored County Parks. Soft sand and mud, water crossings, etc. are the order of the day. The main issue here is a legal place to camp, and fire restrictions. There are plenty of hiking trails and places to canoe or kayak.

Of course, if I were you I'd go to somewhere in PA, WV, Maine...somewhere with some altitude. I'm tired of flat land...:p

I was just up in VT and NY's Adirondacks. There are a lot of great things to see in the NE. Howvever, having also travelled out west, I don't think the NE can compare. There are way more natural wonders out west, and much more varied terrain. Of course it's a lot farther of a trip, but worth it if you can come up with a few weeks to do it. Just driving some PA "non interstates" can be sort of an expedition. Try doing some local trips and not travelling on any major highways. Trust me you will see far more things you never even would have guessed would have been there.
Oh, and I agree with the need for a PA/ NJ / NY meet and greet.

VT has class IV highways I think they are called. They are closed in the winter and the spring; mud season". There is a recent thread on here regarding a trip taken on these roads by an offroad club. I'd check out VT, NH, ME if I were staying in the NE. Coastal ME is also gorgeous, and unlike what we are used to in PA, NJ, NY. I like to travel and see things that blow my mind, things unlike what I am usd to in PA. Coastal ME did that for me, as well as a million places out West.
When are you looking to do this trip, and for how long? We can go from there.

Just outside NE Philly.

Haggis posted a trailride out by St Mary's for Feb 12th, would make for a nice weekend getaway if you can make it.

I'm starting to think my own personal hideaway (Maine) is starting to catch on around here. :shakin:

Check out the North Woods next time.... fantastic area.
