Quick Dumb Tire Question: BFG MTs

Quick stupid question:

Currently Running the BFG MT KM style tire. Been loving this tire for the better part of a decade. But as you can imagine with 10 year old tires, its about that time for replacements.

Are the KM2s just as good or even better? Anyone make the switch?

I'm going to get the exact same size and pretty much mounting them on the exact same rim (got a new set of rims coming, 1" more offset but same width and style).

Like I said, dumb question but wanted to ask!

Oh and fortunately one is still in good shape. Will be nice to have a radial tire as a spare

No personal experience, but in the last 4WD Toyota magazine Bill Burke said they were his favorite tires. If you care what Bill Burke has to say.

From looking at a buddy of mine's KM2s, they've greatly improved the tread's durability in rocks (a set of KM1s i had were just trashed after 2 trips through the Dusy/Ershim trail in the California Sierras where his don't show much more than a little bit of abrasion). My KM1s rode pretty well on the street though and didn't take much weight to balance which I would expect the same of the KM2s (something I cannot say about the Goodyear MT/R-Ks I have now).

Only thing I don't like about the KM2s is their appearance. Since they copied (sort of) the design of the Krawler KX tire, they just look more bland to me, but of course this is all just cosmetics. I have no reason to believe they are not a great performing tire.

I have owned both styles of KM's, several sets of each. The KM2 is superior in nearly all conditions. The KM2 wears far better on road and also outperforms the old style, this I noticed quick. I believe the old KM was superior in mud however that's where I draw the line. KM2 is a great all around tire for one that needs a more aggressive tire than an AT.

Interesting experiences. I loved my KMs to the point I ran them until they were bald and finally had one give up a sidewall. Friends rigs (same XJ platform equally equipped) with KM2s I was not impressed at all. This for PNW style terrain/snow, can't speak for dry rock like the Rubicon or Moab. I find the Goodyear MTR Kevlar to be the only improvement over the older KMs I had. Only exception being tread wear, my KMs lasted a very long time.

Thanks for the input.

I'm mainly concerned with off road traction both in mud, on rocks, and muddy rocks. This is the kind of adverse conditions I have been able to traverse with my current setup. Being able to do this just as well or even better would be ideal. I drive a 40 year old Land Rover so ride quality and noise really doesn't bother me (as long as they aren't bias ply).

I've also heard they weren't all that good in the snow. Typically once every 2~4 years we get a snow here in the south. I do enjoy going out and acting a fool and the KM1 tires performed excellent on all but the steepest iciest roads. I figure if I can get the same snow performance, I'll be happy.

Thanks for the input. Sounds like I need to save my pennies!

Ease of balancing is cancelled out by the crappy steel wheels Land Rover makes.

BTW saw the video of your 200 at VOT. Originally I wasn't too hot on the 200s but it sure did perform. I bet it rocks now that you've got more aggressive tires.

I made the switch last year on my 60 series LandCrusher and have been very pleased. Quiet, ride well, and so far, have worn really well in the 6000 miles I have on them.

We are in the West, but spend a fair amount of time in the Eastern Sierra. The MT's have worked great, and in the little mud we have encountered, they were really well, as they did not fill up and turn to slicks.

Not much snow for us last winter, so I can't comment. I have read they are not the best in snow, but I always carry 2 sets of chains.

No regrets and I will keep using MT's.

Should be a great choice for Ga.

One of the worst tires ever for snow and Ice. Every one of my friends that run them in the summer remove them for the winter. Cooper STT, Interco Truxxus MT, SSR, or the lumpy IROK's stomp them in the snow up here.

Love the tires in everything that I drive them in, which completely excludes snow and ice. I have studded snows for that, do not rely on the Km2s to perform in snow/ice.

Thanks for all of the input.

Yeah if it snows, we buy all the milk and bread, stay at home, call it snowpacolypse, then on day three we fill up social media with complaining.

I guess I could bolt up the TSLs if I wanted to get serious. I bet at 10 psi they'll grip. Or I can just stay in my house and drink scotch.

I love my Km2's... I've had them in plenty of snow and they rock! Ice... not so much, but really on ice it's the driver skill level that I think is more important.
