Quick EGR Question

I searched for an answer here and on 4x4 wire but couldn't find anything of much help. Do you guys typically block off and/or remove the EGR system of the 3.5 SOHC's? I ask because I'm about to go through the arduous timing belt, WP, plugs and wires maintenance so if it's something that should be done I'd like to do it then. On my older vehicles that utilized an EGR system (a turbo 2.3 ford in particular) removing it was also removing a common point of failure. Just wondering what everyone's experience with the EGR in the Monty was.

EGR is a small valve which when activated (when engine is warm) allows a portion of the exhaust gasses to recirculate back through the intake. The purpose is to lower upper cylinder head temperatures (by a lot) which in turn lowers NOx output. By removing the valve, you will be increasing upper cylinder head temperatures which the engine may or may not be tolerant to .....and producing a lot more pollutants with no positive performance. Lot of threads on google. In the old days, guys that didn't understand emissions would remove them and iron head engines worked just fine. Not sure on aluminum head engines... I don't remove mine.

Thanks! I understand the intended function of the EGR system, I just didn't know if the one on this particular platform was as big a reliability liability as it was on some of the other vehicles I've had. Doesn't look like it is, so stay it shall!
