Rack options for ARE shell

I have a 2014 Tacoma double cab (short bed) with an ARE CX canopy, and I am wondering what options I might have for a roof rack on the canopy.

Ideally, I want something low profile, such as a frontrunner rack. Is it possible to mount the rack directly to the channels on the canopy, mans NOT to the Yakima cross bars?

Another option that I am curious about is the possibility of a full length rack that goes over the cab and the canopy, as one piece. Does anyone make a rack like that?

Remember the cab and bed flex separately. Not a lot but you might want to consider two separate racks.

You can find racks from Baja Rack, PrinSu Design, Smittybilt along with the usual from Thule and Yakima.

Many require at least a set of rails for mounting. Though I don't have an ARE, I had the Yakima rails installed on mine when it was built-you may also want to see what the load rating for the shell is.

Hopefully you have the Thule or Yakima tracks mounted to the top of the shell. If not they are fairly easy to add. As far as a one piece I would caution you to keep in mind what ian408 posted, the difference in flex would more than likely cause some issues. Hence why a lot of the lumber racks you see on pickups trucks mount to the bed and have a cantilevered section over the cab.

That being said, I'm a big fan of the Prinsu design. Looks to be a pretty quality rack. Run on over to this thread to get in on the group buy and pick one up while they are at least 15% off, perhaps 25% if enough people get in on the deal.

So does your shell already have the Yakima mounted to it? If so, the Prinsu rack (and possibly some others) will secure to that, no need for the crossbars or new holes. The front rack will secure to your cab via the stock mounting locations that are under the trim piece in the rain channel.

I was looking for a rack, and was doing a little research when I saw the Prinsu group buy... needless to say, Im in on the group buy.

Thanks guys. I will check out the prinsu. For the price it seems like a great option!

And yes, my cap already has the Yakima rails attached.

I have a Leer with rails and mounted my Frontrunner directly to them without the use of crossbars. No problem. Ron
