RIP Winslow

RIP Winslow – aka Winnie.

Winnie was hatched in our house over 16 years ago. We lost her in mid-November. She lived a full life of travel and fun.

Of all the threads on this forum this just might be my favorite.

My family has a thing for Australian Cattle Dogs, once you have one it is hard to get away from them. I got my pup up near Bishop so I figured that Whitney (The Whit for short) would be a proper name for her. Her biggest problem is that she is deaf in her right ear, so she is skittish and very protective of me...but I love her none the less. She loves to ride in the truck and just wants to go everywhere that I do.

The day I brought her home

Whit and her old best friend Dakota. We had to put Dakota down this year due to cancer...still miss that dog

How is the temperament of this breed? Are they as high strung as the average bird dog?

High strung? I'd say no, that seems to have a negative meaning. High energy? Absolutely!

They don't just stand there twitching while their brain shorts out like some dogs I've seen. They have a focus, drive and intelligence that is uncanny; and all the energy to get the job done or die trying. Truly a versatile breed. I really enjoy mine.

They were developed from combining four different hunting breeds. You can read more about the breed here:

Archie finds a mudhole, he rarely passes up an opportunity to make a mess of himself.

I'm a little late and very sorry to hear, but RIP Winslow. Just from the few pictures you posted of her Cabrito, it looks like you gave her an amazing life.

Drahthaar's (and the AKC German Wirehaired Pointers) are great dogs. We have one (GWP) and my wife's parents have two (DD) and we have several friends with them too (both DD and GWP).

If you have children, get a male as female gwps are more aggressive and territorial. Our's and my in-law's two are male and they are fine around children. Our's tends to be timed around young children (less than 5) but we expect this is due to him not being socialized as a pup. We found him at the local shelter.

One thing I should mention is they needs LOTS of exercise each day. We usually take ours on a couple mile walk each day where he can run and run.

Now for some photos!
