Range Rover DESTROYER????

So I was on my way to Utah last week, driving over Vail pass, and there was a Range Rover in front of me. Looked like an older model, but it's hard to tell since they didn't change the body style a lot.

Got closer to it, close enough to read the badge on the tailgate and it read

"DESTROYER SWB"

I was thinking "******?" Who would name an off road vehicle "Destroyer?"

Even if you account for the fact that this may have been a late 70's - early 80's RR, I would still think that a name like "destroyer" would play right into the hands of the anti-vehicular access groups, wouldn't it?

Plus I've had more than a passing interest in 4wd vehicles for about 33 years now and I've just never heard of a "destroyer" model RR. In fact, the only model name I associate with RR is the "County" model (which I think is a LWB model.)

Is this maybe something that was made for a non-English speaking market and then gray-marketed into the US? The vehicle in question had CO license plates. Anybody else ever hear of a "Destroyer" model RR?

There are a few monster truck type range rovers classics here in CO. I know of at least 4 that I have seen first hand. Some of them look great (like the lime green one from the rallye on 37s). Some are beaters.

I have also seen some of them get cute with the sticker lettering on the back. There is one that says "deranged" or something. Not my taste, but who cares, it is just a sticker. As long as he practices responsible tread lightly techniques

My guess is it was not any sort of Range Rover vehicle, but a badge someone made up and put on it. None of the special editions have such an aggressive name.

As far as I know, for the Range Rover Classics, there were these models in the USA

County (that's County, not Country) (upmarket version)
Hunter (upmarket in 89, downmarket in 91)
Great Divide Expedition
40th Anniversary (of Land Rover)
25th Anniversary (of Range Rover)
Brooklands TWR

Overseas there were:

Vogue
Autobiography

I am sure there were others.

That was my thought too but the lettering looked exactly like the kind of lettering you would see on a Range Rover badge, and it appeared to be made of raised metal or plastic, not just stick-on letters.

There was a built RR in Phoenix that put an extra O sticker in the front so that it said "ORANGE ROVER".

It was orange and pretty cool...

I forgot to mention. A few years ago, my daughter's preschool teacher was really pushing reading. I showed her the lettering on the back of our Range Rover one day. Then I put her in it and drove home. When we passed Orange Grove Rd, she said, "Dad! Look! That is like "Range Rover" with an extra O and G!"

I think I am in trouble when she gets older.
