Recommendation on a switch or solenoid to disconnect power from the winch?

I purchased one of those battery disconnect switches at the local Kragen Auto but based on the winch specs (375A@12V during max pull) I don't think it will handle the current draw (IIRC the switch is only ~250-300amps).

Any suggestions on a switch or solenoid I can use instead?

Yes I know it will work fine assuming I'm not maxing out the winch but i'm thinking I'd prefer to do it right in the first place. No, returning or getting a different winch is not an option LOL.

TIA,

Couldn't you just use another winch solenoid upstream of the existing control pack?

What is the purpose of the disconnect for you? Remote mounting the factory solenoid pack under the hood if that is possible would keep most people from using your winch if you hide the control cable connector.

To me.....it seems to add another point for things to fail when you need them most.

I agree. Secure the box and keep it simple. Why take chance on a failure or short.

I just have my winch fused; no additional messing with it.

Unfortunately I don't have that option to mount the control box inside the engine bay. Hence the reason i was originally looking for a switch. If anything it's easy enough to bypass should it for whatever reason fail.

I'm simple. I just keep the positive connector off my battery unless I am going wheeling. Although I have had the "oh crap my winch is dead" moment before I realized I had the cable unhooked...

The problem with those is they only accept up to a #2 cable which is too small for many winch installations.

The obvious - Be sure to check the max amp load on your winch and make sure that the switch you select is rated greater than that for continuous use.

I used one very similar to this for about 10 years and it worked great -
