recommended pressure when airing down tires?

I had to re-read 9K and E-rated. I am sure we were all thinking Jeep, but at 9K thats a big Jeep! I saw his avatar and read his sig then it made more sense.

Brings up an interesting point. Does highway (or max) air pressure have an effect on how far down you can go?

For instance do you air down a 50 psi rated tire as far as a 30 psi tire?

We have a lot of miles on that combo. We run 18 psi for almost all trail conditions. In the rocks, 18 seems to work well, though we have gone lower on slickrock to about 15. The challenge seems to be more about the loss of ground clearance than the need for additional traction. For example, Jeep runs the Rubicons at street pressure when running the Rubicon Trail. The axle clearance is more important than the traction advantage.

On sand, 14 psi is a great number and very effective. We have run as low as 5 psi in emergency sand traction scenarios.

In general, with a good driver, you can run much lower pressures than you dare. . .
