Red's deuce camper project

Decided to sell the MUST shelter, dropping it off Wednesday in central Texas. Ordered a soft top for the cargo area and will be camping out of the truck during the move to Washington.

Shelter is unloaded. One of the mounts we were using snapped (campers back end slid down about 3 feet before it hit the ground). No damage besides the busted mount. Winch and bed roller worked great.

Sorry to see the MUST shelter go...it's pretty cool with the sides dropped down. Hopefully you find another in WA. I'm guessing it's gone so you can fit more of your junk in the back for the move?

I got rid of it because of the drop in fuel economy. It made a huge flat wall to catch air, brought me down to 50 mph and 6 mpg.

Ordered a canvas top. I'll be camping in the bed during the trip.

My first thought when I saw the Big MUST Shelter was, "Wow! His fuel milage is really gonna suck now."

Hated to see it go as it would make such a nice home while up north.
That Canvas top is gonna get old in the long run. Plus the lack of security. At least with the Shelter you could have dropped it on the ground as a Tiny House and driven the Truck for transportation and hauling.

I've always had a soft spot for these old Military truck, but never found the need to get one myself. I always wanted an APC if I was going to spend the money.

I'm located in Rhome, north of your house in Fort Worth, you get back in town let me know. Would love to see this thing up close.

Have you thought of putting a pop up camper or hard side camper in the bed for living quarters like the guy did in Italy?

BTY, I used to build campers way back when. We could have tricked out that MUST into a nice RV Box.

Put me down as Subscribed.:ylsmoke:

Yea, the shelter brought me down to 6-7mpg at 50mph, loved the space but a MUST is a better, non mobile cabin in my opinion.

I currently (for another week) live in Midland, my parents live north of Ft Worth in Sherman Texas. I'll be moving up to Bellingham Washington after the new fuel pump arrives.

The plan for the truck is to keep it versatile, winch and bed roller opened a lot of doors with that. Makes it easy to load/unload different platforms, depending on what's needed at the time.

Platforms that I'm thinking of right now are:
1. Warm weather camping. The canvas top attached to the platform with a few fold out beds, toilet, and a storage box with counter space for a camping stove and shelves underneath for storage. Leaves plenty of room for dirt bikes or a side by side.

2. Long term/cold weather camping platform. Something with a expandable roof (like a pop up camper), hard sided.

3. Others as wanted and needed.

The canvas will not stay on the truck all the time

Have you thought about losing one of the rear axles? Gain a lot of space around the frame, shave weight and rolling resistance. The drop in weight and resistance would give you more weight to work with for living quarters/toys.

Not required, I'll be under weight laws even with maximum payload. I'm under 14k pounds with a maximum payload of 10k. 3rd axle helps with traction and weight distribution when offroad (sand especially).

Would make for 2 fewer tires to buy and less maintenance. Tempting.

Used the winch and roller today. The wooden box is leftover from when the canvas cover was delivered, won't survive repeat use.

Lots of traveling is the plan. I'll be making an 1800 mile drive soon. Empty right now I get 11mpg at 55mph, not a bad starting point. Whatever can be done to improve fuel economy, without too much of a sacrifice, is a bonus.

If an axle gets dropped it most likely won't be soon. New turbo, fuel pump, and 12 volt system are next. Want to make a summer camping platform soon. Then its manual locking hubs, power steering, and winch mounting.

Wow, that was a significant drop in speed and MPG! Sounds like a aerodynamic fairing would be required for any large box options on the back.

Considering the size difference from mine, 11mpg is awesome, I get a solid 14 right now.
