Refrigeration.

At work at the moment we're converting the rear aluminum storage box on a BMW GS 1200 into a well insulated icebox. No big deal I suppose it's common to do. Is it??

Anyway has anyone here ever built in proper refrigeration using a small compressor that only runs when the bikes charging system is operating. I want to suggest it to the customer if it's possible. Has this been done before?? Sorry if it's common knowledge. I haven't had too much to do with setting up Exp bikes. Any advice. Would this be a good idea or just be adding too much weight?

Eeesh. I'm sure you could do it, but...

At the point where you're packing a frdige, I'd think you're more of a packmule than a motorcycle rider. Less is more.

Hey, Thanks for the comment. Taken on board. We finished the icebox conversion of the standard BMW 1200 GS rear aluminium box. Looks pretty good but if we had to fit a small compressor etc. I suppose we'd be talking another 8kgs or more. This one is 11 kgs (26lbs). Maybe it would be too much weight.

If guys were doing a long Cape York trip here, I thought it would be a great idea. Sure, just a weekend away and the icebox will be fine.

You might want to look at a Peltier device -- a thermoelectric plate that could probably keep a small well insulated area cool. You could also combine that with a BIC from HellRoaring for an auto/on/off control.

Interesting idea.

One thing to remember is what your total weight will end up being, not just the unit empty.

8 - 10 kg's is a fair amount of weight back there, but add another 5 - 6 of provisions and it may be more than you bargained for.

Why can't they just start selling the self-refrigerating beer can to solve this problem?

Keep us posted on how it turns out. Pics would be nice.

If you're putting a refridge where the topcase goes, be aware that BMW's recommended max weight for the TC and contents is 11Kg, 22Kg in each pannier.

Fridge on 2 wheels

I ride a 1200GSA too.....I was thinking more of a mounting a recliner somewhere to take along, you know..... so I could relax each day after the long trip down.
