Repeaters and routes/maps

There're many sites out there with repeater maps. This site has what you're looking for; a route planner: http://www.repeaterbook.com/repeaters/travel.php . More often I use repeaterbook's droid app: It searches for and maps repeaters based on your exact location. It's free and works well. But it's hard to use in advance if you're planning a route.

Here's what I use, TravelPlus for Repeaters by the ARRL: http://www.arrl.org/shop/TravelPlus-for-Repeaters-CD-ROM

It's a map-based program/database; you can draw any route you want, specify a search radius, and it will compile a table/spreadsheet of all the repeaters with their offsets and PL tones that can be loaded directly into most radio's programming software.

Also if you have 2 way APRS many repeater systems due put out a local area beacon on APRS. (not all do)
If your in range of a repeater you will see it on your APRS station list. Kind of like Ham radar. This is a local only beacon and normally is not passed on by the APRS digipeaters.
I have a repeater system and the local object beacon is sent out every 15 or 20 minutes, if seen on the APRS station list you can for sure work my repeater system.
