Just saw your rig down by the river in the 'Couv. Nice job! Makes me want to jump ship from the LC80 I'm working on into a 4runner! Only in town for work or I would've waited around to say hi!

dang! yeah i was at McMenamins, having dinner with the wife. in town for work? what do you do if you dont mind me asking? sometimes i wish i had the room of the 80s, and the axles... i have a couple friends who rock the old 80s and yeah they are magnificent machines. but the fuel mileage is what has kept me away -not that my runner gets much better 17-18 mpg on the hwy if im lucky. do you have a build on here? links? id love to check out your rig. how did you know i was on here, was it the expo stickers on the fuel tanks? or had you seen my build before and recognised the truck when you saw it? in the past 6 or so months my rig has been popping up all over the internet, its kinda surreal, cause i dont think its all that special yet, i look at it and see all the things it still needs... thanks for the kind words btw. hope your visit to portland/vancouver is pleasant and you get all accomplished you intended. would have been nice to say "hi" to a fellow portal member!

I'm a hydrographic surveyor. Work for David Evans and Assoc Marine Services in Vancouver so I'm up here often!
The 80 will gobble up all the gear I can throw at it and some! 17mpg would be AMAZING! I can't seem to break 12 with the rack and RTT.
I don't have a build thread yet, concentrating on the house building first but will have a Baja trip report up soon.
I noticed the Expo stickers so started looking around and found your build. Pretty hard to walk past suck a built truck and not stop and drool a little!

so yesterday i came home to two brown boxes on my front porch, seams ARB shipped me a couple lockers for my 4runner. now i just have to get the new gears and get it all installed. i also got my new adjustable rear panhard bar installed last night along with swapping out one of my blown shocks(again).

video of me out on fathers day. there was two FJC that had the rear Elockers that could not make it up without winching, and then two JKs that made it up, but took a lot longer than i did and both of them had lockers f/r. -another 4runner made it up, but he had dual cases and also locked f/r. so i was very happy with my rig being open/open and stock gearing.

so tomorrow i should be picking up my completed f&r diffs with 4.88s and ARBs. and today i ordered a set of medium hi-flow RunCool hood louvers for the runner. after installing a dual electric fan kit with shroud, 170* thermostat and eliminating the stock fan, i am running a little warmer than i would like even on cooler days. my average temps are around 190-200* without the AC, and with the AC on its about 200-210*. if i sit at idle my intake temp also rises... i even thermo insulated my airbox and intake tube... still temps can rise to over 140* if im just idling, so i figure letting the heat out will only help. a cooler engine will make more power and last longer... toyota designs its motors to run a little warm. they do this for a couple of reasons, emissions is the main reason but also efficiency. but my thinking here is the more power will make up for the efficiency issue -more power being made, means the motor wont have to work as hard to do the same actual work, thus uses less fuel... that along with my regear and fan delete i should feel like i gained some power. at least thats my hope.

I think you need a couple bilge blowers. Not really heard of in the off-road world but it is an excellent way to get the the hot stagnant air out of the engine bay during no air flow situations ( slow times). Keep the ambient air temp down. Just remember your exhaust is the biggest heat output and heat rises.

ehh you get used to it lol, its not the first time ive taken a hole saw to a perfectly good panel on my truck... yeah its one of those things like poo or get off the pot, go big or go home? honestly i thought about paying a body shop to do it for me, but i was like forget that noise, just take my time and do my typical OCD thing and make it happen. i used some permitex hi-temp silicone on the underside of the vents. i put a think skim layer all the way around inline with all the rivet holes to help seal things up, prevent and fight vibrations and it also helped to hold the vents in place as i riveted them down.

yes they are RunCool hood louvers, good eye. funny you should mention rain, later on that night after installing them we had a pretty good thunder storm with rain, and zero issues. im not worried. i will take it through a car wash tomorrow though if i can find one open on sunday
