RMP&Os 1977 Patrol Ute build for overlanding

Another thought for the airbags is to use something kind-of like what U-Joint does for their vans, with no fixed lower mount ... allows the axle to articulate past the bag extension, if you have that much travel. Winds up being a similar concept to like a hydro-bump or something (probably not news to you, but here's a good illustration of hydro bumps upping load carrying in a Raptor application: http://www.rpgoffroad.com/a-performance-and-towing-suspension/), but probably quite a bit cheaper (also not really any added damping).

Part #ABZ01, about 3/4 of the way down, on this page: http://www.ujointoffroad.com/4wdparts.html ... obviously this isn't a drop-in, but rather an illustration of a concept that I'm sure you'd have no trouble with implementing for the Ute's specs.

I was pretty sure I had said it before, but if not I'll say it again: that modular concept for the bed/load-out is really appealing; as an engineer, multi-use stuff is always intriguing to me.

So I extended the frame rails in the rear 12.5" to handle the long Deaver springs.

I started out by sleeving the frame with some 2.5" 3/16s wall box tube. I sleeved it 10" into the frame rail.

The stock frame rail is a bit of an odd size which I was unable to find any steel stock in the exact same size. So I cut down and customized some 3x2" 1/8" wall tube.

I then flipped the frame over, something I couldn't do by myself before building the cart.

I then made this 3/16" plate for the bottom of the frame in order to have a nice surface to weld the shackle hanger to.

All done

It is looking like I will go SuA in the rear

But stay SoA in the front

Lovin the progress... And I'm more then a little jealous of the work space ;)

You mention a "multi-purpose bed", have you thought about making your own "Ute Bed" like all the Aussie trucks??? I still can't figure out how they've not caught on here like they have over there. My HJ70 Ute was one of the most versatile hauling machines I've ever had the pleasure of operating with that bed on it. I can just see you making one with your own twists on it and having it come out awesome...

I have Dave. Really the possibilities are endless with the bed. Often in Patrol or Cruiser circles people kind of prefer a factory bed. Obviously this makes the truck worth more to the pursuist's or collector. However, this Patrol did come from Nissan as a cab and chassis which was common when marketed at farming communities in specific countries. As such I think a multi-platform bed is the key with this truck. As talked about before in the thread I am picturing a flat bed that carries the standard gear. Such as fuel cell, batteries, spare tire, recovery gear, tools and spare parts. Neatly tucked away into a seroes of drawers-storage bins up against the cab. Back from there it is open country to build a bolt on platform system. Could even have one of those hard sided pop-out camping platforms seen on Aussie Utes. Or bolt on a roll cage. Or leave it a flat bed for hauling lumber and such. Or set it up with an over bed RTT with storage underneath that. Like I say the possibilities are endless. At the current frame rail extension, the bed can be 6ft long and have very little over hang in the rear. Like next to none. To go 8ft long will reduce departure angle.

Looking killer Ian

I'm down here in Patrol country currently. I've literally seen thousands of them in just the last few days. At one intersection we saw 14 heading in different directions, turns out they are an extremely popular taxi option in many cities. They are 4WD but often the front driveshaft is missing or the hubs are pulled. I was thinking about you when I saw so dang many of them.

Typical intersection look... you can count 5 Patrols just in view of the camera:

I am going to say, very obviously Colombia. However, the tiny flag in the RHS of the picture is also a giveaway.

In Cartegena, I once counted no less than 20 something Patrols (classics) on one street corner at the same time. Colombia is definitely the mecca for 60-series Patrols.

Safe and adventurous JOURNEY's Kurt!!

BTW, jealous, would absolutely love to be there right now! And ya know, we all love Cruisers but those Patrols are taxi's for good reason!

:)

Got the donor truck in the shop and getting ready to pull the old oil burner....

The shop is kind of full with Patrols right now. Red 66 in foreground is getting it's motor pulled also.

I've always loved that 260-series of yours... For some reason I thought she was all torn apart but it's cool to see her still sitting pretty... Awesome collection of truck right there. A guy down the way had an old 60's Patrol and I just love climbing around these old trucks and seeing how they decided to "do things" -vs- others of the time and in general.

Thanks! :)

So this morning I decided to run the old diesel one last time before I pulled it from the 1983 Patrol. Dumped some Marvel Mystery Oil in the oil sump and started it up. It fired right up easily once I gave it 24v. Ran it upwards of 45 minutes, even put some loads on it using the brakes in the truck and moving it back and forth 8ft. I then proceeded to pulling the engine and trans/t-case. Got the radiator out and flushed the heck out of it. Just about all the wiring is disconnected. Motor, trans & t-case oil drained, drivelines out. Heater lines, vac line and fuel lines disconnected. Just need to pull the trans + t-case and I am ready to yank the motor. Would pull them all together but very heavy and the truck is pretty tall on wheels. 2-4 more hours and I think I will have the motor + trans/t-case out of the truck and on the shop floor.

Short video of running the diesel before tear down.

I think if I ever get all these other projects done the next one will be to put a v8 and some Dana 60's under the 1983 Patrol.

Damn MQ is tall even with the portals on the floor!! Bumper sticks out to far to get a good hook on the engine too.

Good to go, that is an Exedy Safari Tuff 12" clutch in there. :)

Just to prove the diesel will fit, here is an SD33 fitted to a G60 Patrol.
