Roof Cargo box Options?

Hi Gang!

I'm needing o put a cargo box up on the roof rack of my Jeep XJ.
It needs to hold a 32"X37"X10" box as well as have some space left over for a few duffel bags. I've got a Yakima gutter mount rack and have been looking at the boxes they sell as well as the offerings from Thule.
I'm just wondering what other viable options are out there...

Many Thanks

You could do a google search for cargo carrier, cargo boxes, cargo roof etc and check the shopping results. Everything available will pop up.

I'm pretty familiar with Internet searching ;)

What I'm asking for is input from folks who've had some thing closer to real world, hands on experience with Thule and/or Yakima boxes.
Additionally I would like to know if there are better options - i.e. stronger or made of metal or boxes that are just as good as the big two but cheaper...

Many Thanks

I have one of the large Yakima baskets we put on the Cherokee and now the Sequoia when we go to the beach or other long trips. I looked at boxes, but for cost, I got the basket. The other bonus is I can toss wet gear up there when we kayak, and not drag it into the vehicle.

I love the look and the idea of a basket!

BUT I gotta have dry space big enough to put a folded massage table in.
Also, we spend a lot of time on the hi-way so aerodynamic is important...

I have had good luck and years of service from my cargo box:

Purchased from Sears for under $200
It looks like there has been a little redesign: X-Cargo Sport 20 Car Top Carrier
The X-Cargo Sport 20 comes completely assembled and holds up to 100 lbs. of evenly distributed cargo. Fits most vans, SUVs and crossover vehicles with factory-installed or after-market roof rack systems rated at 150 lbs. or more. 20 cu. ft. capacity. 67-1/2 x 36-1/4 x 20-1/4 in

The Thule side kick is a little shorter and wider, but neither are matching your width requirements.
I think you may not find a cargo box wide as you require. Perhaps a cargo bag and a basket if needed?

Saris did/does make a nice box set up. If you could fine one used that we great. My family had one for about 6 years and it didnt even fade. I would imagine that most pods are made in the same factory and are just rebadged. There really isnt that much to them.

I looked for a cargo rack for a while before purchasing a used Yakima Load Warrior with extension. Seems to be pretty well made and strong. I also recently purchased a plastic Thule cargo carrier (used). Those things are way overpriced and not very durable. It must have about $5 worth of materials in it yet sells new for $575.

I have always had good luck with pelican cases in the roof basket (the grey or desert tan ones don't cook as much as the black ones. Obviously you can't get too heavy up there.

I also have a yakima load warrior basket I wouldn't mind parting with -- don't need it anymore.

Thanks Guys!

The first thing I thought of was storm cases (or Pelli) in a basket on my yak bars. I've got a few Storm cases and I like them a lot! My problem is I've got to keep a massage table safe and dry. It's 37"X32"X10", I'm not sure they even make them Pelli's or Storm's in a compatible size...
Also, I do a lot of hi-way driving and I just don't think I want to put a big heavy non aerodynamic brick up there!
The Yakima Space Cadet 15s is 58in(l)x38in(w)x15(h)in so it would work fine. I'm thinking 60-65 inches max length before it starts to look really goofy...
Any other ideas?

Many thanks

I have the Thule Mountaineer with 17 cu ft. (and it is in cheesy realtreecamo color). It is for my skis, generally, but I'll put it on in the summer when I need some extra room. The only beef I have with the system is the locking cylinder freezes up very easy. Living in a rainforest that can get sub-zero temps does not help. I have to take it off the truck twice a winter to thaw out the lock so it works. As for mileage I only loose 1 at the most 2 mpg with it on.

How big is the basket, and what would you want for it?

I like storm cases too -- but I don't think they come in other colors (not a big deal for most).

didn't mean to thread-jack about the basket...mrstang01, I'll pm you.
