Round 1 : Aussie Camper Trailer Build

Wanderlust, its a sicknes
Here's a bunch of photos of my round 1 Camper Trailer. I say round 1 as I'm just starting my second 1 based on some valuable lessons learnt.

First starting at the end. The trailer has been a great success and used on some very serious expeditions. Many lessons learnt and some modifications made but I'm starting from scratch for the next one. Call me crazy !

Key points for next time
- Add more lightness !
- Sleeping arrangements are important - I hate it when kids want my bed
- Setup time is critical given we do alot of quick overnight stops

the trailer is primary based on 50x50mm Square Section with a 75mm drawbar. Landcruiser hubs, 45mm axle with 6 leaf springs (needed 7) & bilstein shocks. Chassis is excellent but i found the plate steel & checker just added too much weight for what is non structural. (next time aluminium)

Tents is excellent, however awning is fairly painful setup. The key point I must address for next time is the kids hate sleeping on camp stretchers whilst mum & dad enjoy the queen size elevated bed. Add more fairness next time

Some tent photos.

Awning was fairly unecessary given the interior space. Wow that canvas weights alot too. I'd estimate 100kg's for the tent

Absolutely love that the bed is setup and made. Maybe a roof top tent next time with the same ability

Performance of the trailer was fine on some very tough dirt tracks \ corrugated dirt roads etc. Some stone chip damage so next time will integrate a stone guard.

Hate lugging a heavy spare, will either match to car or risk it with some serious off road tyres

Next design is likely to be more based on some of the off road teardrop campers I've seen around

- no setup - just jump in
- roof top tent gives comfort for four without the kids being on the ground - they'll love it up top
- bike rack capable
- I'll make lightweight spaceframe steel design - not wood - needs to be off road capable
- ditch the spare - too heavy
- likely make the camper top demountable so I can use the trailer whilst not camping
- Make the chassis strong from steel, everything else aluminium
- Keep it light, simple & compact - add lightness - its camping after all

Lets get to it, more soon

Those tents are something else. We need more of that stuff stateside. Awesome Build btw. How long does that tent take to set up?

Tent pivots out from trailer top, all poles etc are fitted already so its just a case of removing cover and it opens out. four pegs and its free standing. Maybe a couple of mins minute max. Only real downside is it needs a fair bit of space off to the side

The awning and additional walls take a a while longer and velcro onto the folding part along the roofline. About 100kg's including awning which has walls and floor. Only ever used that once, the folding part is easy big enough for four.

Helps if you tall
