The dealer-led events tend to have large numbers of very inexperienced drivers. The goal is to increase the driver's confidence in the vehicle, by taking them off road in a very controlled environment.
It is a LOT of fun to see the excitement and enthusiasm on the faces of these virgin off roaders. I really enjoy that aspect of it. However, as a driving event, they are pretty basic.
The LR3 does really well in the sand, but you're friend will be advised to keep a few things in mind that are particular to this truck:
1. Turn DSC off!! This is a button up high above the radio. Push it until the light on the dash is illuminated.
2. Do everything in the sand in Low Range.
3. Drive it like a stick. The sweet spot in deep sand is between 2nd and 3rd gears
4. Understand Sand Mode. It retards the throttle at take off to prevent wheel spin, but once you are moving, it
increases throttle response and is quite fun. I generally advise using Mud/Ruts mode for low speed, then Sand mode once you get moving...if you like to spin the wheels a bit

5. Ground clearance is an issue. You can't go over 30mph in Off Road mode (raised supension), so expect to "snow plow" from time to time.
6. The OME tires are really bad. Air down as far as seems prudent, at least to 20psi (down from 42). I run my Nitto's/Coopers at 15psi, but I have more sidewall than the stock tires.
7. There are very solid recovery points front and rear. They are behind small plastic panels that come off easily with a 90 degree turn of the thumbscrews holding them on. Use a dime as a screwdriver to take them off. Do it BEFORE you hit the sand. Otherwise, you may get the front one torn off due to the clearance issues in #5 above.
8. Keep the sunroof closed. It's a major pain to get sand out of the tracks later on....

Post some pictures and a recap of your observations and thoughts when you return. I'd like to hear your comments on the LR3.
