The diffs are not really any stronger as well. They still fail at the cross pin quite easily. That may be the logic to making the shafts weak, so they would fail before the diff. Anyway the stock stuff is all pretty crappy and fortunately there are good aftermarket options for everything.

Earlier genuine 24 spline shafts as used on Salisbury and "HD" Rover axles were not wasted to this extent and seem to use decent materials.

just make sure that your weak link doesn’t move to be the input shaft of your trans.

I have a 700R4. I don't think it'll break before an axle. I also have an NP241HD. Also upgraded to Tom Woods driveshafts.

My weak link are the axles.

That's because you welded the spider gears in the diff. If not then the diff probably would have broken first.
