perkins

Perkins are heavly used in the marine industry, great engines, also used in generators etc. I once converted a 4cyl perkins mdl 4107 from a generator to a sailboat motor.Part should not be an issue as they are internationally available... Made in Britain under Perkins LTD i believe

The larger models still do, the smaller ones are running little 3cyl'ers of Japanese origin's, those little small acreage tractors.

The small diesels are usually Yanmar or sometimes Dihatsu, We are seeing the Yanmars show up MilSpec Generators for the Army times have changed

Was looking at that same add. While parts are not common they are still able to be found with a little work.

Perkins parts aren't terribly difficult to find.
I can tell you don't waste your money on the $75 kit for the turbo. If there's shaft play, rebuild it, and that's not $75.
It might be $75 in parts, but getting the turbine and compressor wheels balanced will add to it.
If the play is bad enough that the compressor wheel has been rubbing the housing that mean bits of aluminum have been ingested by the engine. Possibly not an issue, but something to keep in mind.

Perkins engines are generally very good. For instance, I rebuilt a Perkins 4.203 and install it in a guys 88 and he ran it without oil until it stalled.
On tear down the crankshaft only needed polishing. Bearings were shot, but crank was fine.

edit to fix typo

It depends on the regs. Here in GA OBD1 vehicles can be converted to diesel and then are exempt. OBDII, not.

With an industrial engine that was never installed in a passenger vehicle? I used to live in CO in an emissions area and if I remember correctly, an engine swap must meet the emission standards of whatever is newer, the vehicle or the engine.

Leave well alone. As has been pointed out, the Perkins was/is a decent engine but they were designed for tractors and boats making it a truly awful RR conversion. Popular in the UK in the seventies and eighties in the days before LR had launched the Tdi engine. They are a throwback to primitive diesel days. They'll pull top gear from 10mph and cruise all day......at 50mph max if your ears can stand it
