RSB's Radiant Red Tacoma build

Too true. I have the sag bad now. Wish I would have done the end-cap mod up front. Now I have to drop the bumper and disconnect all the wiring, and...

I haven't used my winch all that much and I've got a bumper forward pitch that will only get worse with every pull until that thin metal just pulls away from its tack welds. You can notice it clearly when viewing the ARB crush can interface to the frame horns.

I think if you ever get an ARB bumper, and ever plan to winch with it, you do this mod before install.

Really? I don't see how not doing the end cap mod would loosen the bolts though.

But either way, I definitely agree this mod is necessary.

Really. It's not a matter of the bolts loosening, it's the thin-wall metal plate that is tack welded into place. The metal actually bulges and deforms. Check out the modification pictures again. Some I've seen have the end cap seperating from the weld. Once you take a look at it again in person with your MK I eyeballs, you'll see that the end-cap and it's weld was never really intended to stand up to the weight of an after-market bumper, winch, line, lights, etc., AND the added stress of winching. Originally the mounting was firm and perky; now 3 years after my original install and my bumper is sagging like an 80 year olds... well you get my metaphor. Just need a little cosmetic surgery to lift and enhance what I currently have. ;)

Oh, I misunderstood. Yes, I made this modification awhile back before even using my winch. Guess my confusion though was with how the bulging was related to the bolts loosening, as he had described was happening. I didn't realize not doing the mod could also cause the bolts to loosen. Now I know. :)

(TacoStan) recently put and ARB on his 96 Taco. He was aware of the end cap mod and in an effort to save time He ordered a prefab end cap kit from Shrock Works. I saw the end cap kit before it was installed and I think it is a great resource for those of us with limited time or skill. Note grinding, cutting and welding are still involved.

I'm not affiliated with SW.

I do plan on ordering their kit for my Father's 3rd gen 4runner, when the ARB bumper is installed.

hey there Jacque! Sounds sweet. I didn't realize kits were actually made.

oh ya I mean, I know everything about the reason for doing the end-cap mod as you described, hence why I did it myself too. Guess my confusion was just w/how the bulging was related to the bolts loosening, as he had described was happening. I didn't realize not doing the mod could also cause the bolts to loosen. Now I know! :)

Oh cool -- you already did the mod. Good to go then -- I didn't want to see you get any big surprises after you did all that work.

Second this. I own a SW bumper w/ their end cap. Jim and Justin actually did it for me down at their shop while I waited. Not an iota of prob in dozens of pulls. Rock solid.

Shrockworks rules.

Thanks. Ya. I noticed flyingwil, Wilman and Scott Brady all did the same thing. I looked into it more and realized how crucial it was to make this modification.

Wondering...

Ryan,

The 'problem' with the ARB was brought up by my fabricator - Jed (Armorology). He has told me that several guys have had to tighten their ARBs back down following winching at angles.

I have had to winch twice since I have owned the rig. Once I was buried to my axles in thick kansas mud. Another time I had to winch out a buddy's full size dodge (regular cab 2WD) out of a thicket. I have not experienced any loosening with my Armorology bumper. I have 6 attachment points per side...

I was just wondering if you had this issue at all. I figure that you would give an accurate account if this was...your build is exceptional.

Regards,

BWJ
