RTT Maggiolina and Columbus question to current owners

I am about to pull the trigger on either a Maggiolina or a Columbus. I would like opinions from owners or people that have actually slept in these.

I would like comments on the sizes of the tents. I am 6-0 @195lbs and my wife is 5-5 120lbs. What size would you recommend small or med and also what about the Xlong in the columbus?

Pull into camp and find a nice level spot.
Take a leisurely walk around your vehicle checking things out after the day's adventure while unclipping the fasteners on your Maggiolina.
Step up on your rear tire or bumper and gently crank up your room for the night while carrying on a conversation, or enjoying a frosty cold beverage, if your really talented and well balanced!

I can park and go to sleep in my Maggiolina Airand all within 90 seconds, and on some days that includes the frosty cold beverage!

We have the small version of the Airland and its perfect for two people and even two people and a dog.

We use it with two people and two toddlers, the key is getting the kids so tired that they pass out and also not being bothered by close quarters.

I chose the maggiolina over the columbus because it's more storm worthy. I've been very happy with my grand tour and highly recommend it.

I have a small Grand Tour and I'm 5'10". Length is fine but could be a bit wider for camping with the wife. I think the medium would be a better fit.

My thoughts on the Maggiolina AirLand were aired here.

I choose the AirLand over the Columbus after much reading, and the AirLands tend to not get condensation like the other model.

Setup is a breeze with either model though.

I am about 5'10" or so, and around 220.
The medium model is good for me, and I had plenty of room in it, and my feet did not feel like they were cramped.

The bed is harder than what I am use to, but I got use to it.

I would recommend an extra long size if you are a back sleeper and a medium if you are a side sleeper. Medium/X-long would be nice if you are willing to spend that extra bit.

We recently returned from a 10 day excursion with our new Columbus (medium) tent. I'm about the same size as you. She is shorter than your wife and I have no intention of asking what she weighs, lol.

My impressions with the medium size are mostly positive. I did sleep at a bit of an angle to give my feet a bit more room, but I usually sleep with my feet poking out from the bottom of the covers anyway. I don't like sleeping, feeling like my feet are pinned down. Regarding width, we were fine with the medium size model. Plenty of room. I would not have wanted a smaller space though.

One afternoon, we were taking a nap with the doors rolled open and the sun was hitting us right in the face. So we turned ourselves around, putting our heads at the hinged end and our feet poking out of the open door at the other end. I thought having my head in the narrow end would make me feel claustrophobic but it wasn't an issue. I'll bet I slept like that for an hour.

You can't beat the quick set-up of the Columbus. One latch, watch it raise up, unzip the doors, crawl in & unhook the bungees. Done.

We were fortunate to have good weather for the trip so I can't say how it is in poor weather or heavy winds. I just know we wanted the headroom of the Columbus, for ease of dressing and in case of being stuck inside in the rain, we wanted to be able to sit up and play cards or whatever. I think we're going to be very happy with the Columbus.

kcowyo,

Nice tent! I have one coming from Mike any day now - should be a nice setup atop my AT Horizon. I'm only 5'6" so stretch out length won't be an issue for me. How much bedding can you store with it closed?

Wade, I sent you a PM, but for public record we used a set of flannel sheets and a queen size down comforter. Those and the pillows stayed inside and it worked out great. We probably could have left another blanket in if we had it and needed it.

Congrats on the new tent! :campfire:
