RTT on a full-size van?

Your ladder position tells me our mounting heights are similar. I carry a telescoping ladder. I don't know how I'd reach to install/remove the rain fly otherwise. http://amazon.com/dp/B00AQ2CC2Q

As for the body shifting, there's plenty of ways to create simple stiff legs that fit between the ground and the frame.

Just my .02 cents, Ive had my Tepui on multiple 4WD and lifted 2WD vans and a couple suburbans, the ladder mine came with is plenty tall even with 285 tires, lift etc. see below. Height on a 4WD van is an issue, I either climb on the tires with an extended zipper rope, use a step or one of my van monkeys (kids) scrambles around up there, zipping, unzipping etc. All trouple aside, we really love sleeping up high is a portable tree house and a lot of fun. Im building a 2010 Quigley 1 ton right now and going with a massive double length, double ladder RTT. Will probably be a huge PITA but my kids will love it.

I'd recommend a hard shell tent and probably a clamshell style for ease of deployment/packing. Take a good look at the Terrapod roof tent. It's a new tent that is on the market and I've got one on order. It's very low profile (under six inches tall), light and it has an optional roof rack for carrying a canoe or Maxtrax recovery boards. I've seen the prototypes and the first production unit and it's a great design using modern materials.

The designer/owner has a thread in the Camping Equipment forum has a thread on his project and it's a truly impressive tent.cJb58fx.jpghzozrei.jpg
