Rubber diamond plate panels and some kind of bracket on the hood? Any ideas?

Driving to work this morning there was a lime green 2nd gen Xterra in the lane next to me. Looked like it had a mild lift, off road lights and some kind of custom grille. Nicely done, overall.
.
But what caught my eye were what appeared to be some rubber or plastic (I'm assuming, some kind of stick-on) black diamond plate panels. I'm thinking these are just for looks? Oh and on the corners of the hood were what appeared to be some kind of bracket or holder made of similar black material. At first I thought maybe a mount for a GoPro camera or some such but now I'm not sure. Has anyone seen these before and/or know what they are?

Sometimes I see that stuff for when you are mounting things and such in order to not damage the paint but I don't see what the purpose those serve besides maybe looks.

My guess is that he used a "Reese Towpower Sure Step Self Stick Rubber Mat" available from Home Depot. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Reese-Towpower-Sure-Step-Self-Stick-Rubber-Mat-1041200/205703833

Any thoughts on what the clips are on the hood corners though? Only thing I could think of was maybe a place to attach a limb riser? What else would you carry there?

I don't know what all the other stuff is for, but I've been thinking of putting some sort of rubber traction on the hood/cowl of my FJ40 because I climb up there to access the roof and it gets pretty slippery when it's wet.

Maybe this guy is into parkour and needs traction for when he's doing flips off his car?
