Rubicon Unlimited vs Unlimited Sport

I had a chance to get the new ride out for a test. I've added a Warn front bumper

And put on a roof rack.

I'm waiting for a Yakima top box for a secure place to put my packs/stuff - also so its out from under foot.

I placed an order with ursaminorvehicles for their Ecamper shell/pop top. Here's the link to the J30. http://www.ursaminorvehicles.com/jeep.htm This will do for some trips and spur of the moment camps. Still looking for a "base camp" type trailer - I really like some of the off-road teardrops, but $$$$

Great looking bumper! Can't wait to see pics of the J30.

I went Sport because it's one of the only rigs you can still get with manual everything. Windows, locks, gearbox, seats, etc. The Unlimited Rubicon comes standard with the Power Convenience Group which includes stuff like Power Locks, Heated Mirrors, [Power] Windows, Keyless Entry and Alarm. It's nice to keep it simple.

That is LAME! I just checked the 'build your own' thing on the Jeep website. Yup, 2-door doesn't come standard with all that stuff.....4-door does....

Exactly why I love my LJ so much. Manual EVERYTHING, 2 door, LWB, Rubicon pkg.

When I got my Rubicon, which was a replacement for my LJ Rubicon, I thought the electric windows and locks, the remote start and lock/unlock functions, alarm were just useless, ridiculous features on a Jeep...

But a JK is wide enough that there is no reaching across to unlock the passenger door or roll down the window, and I'll admit that I have come to appreciate the rest of the fru fru stuff.

You can still custom order a Rubicon 4-door without any of that stuff.
A while back someone posted here confirming they had done it with a 2012 saying "The dealer was amazed to see a Rubicon so cheap"

2-door or 4-door? I think one is easier than the other?

Your next addition should definitely be a programmer (Im partial to Superchips). I was in Moab for the EJS this year, and took the 4 door sport because I was just planning on hitting the vendor show, of course with buddies egging me on, I ended up on Hell's Revenge. The 4 door is the work truck, so it was the first time I have had it in the rocks (even bought a bumper after the raffle, just to have front tow points). So I was expecting a lot of winching, but I set the programmer to Crawl mode and chose my lines a little more carefully than some of the other guys, but it impressed the heck out of me and all the other guys that knew I was running without lockers and basically Michelin highway tires. Never winched anything, and the only line I bypassed was Tipover Challenge just because I figured I really should have a rear locker, but later in the trail after the obstacles it conquered, I think it could have made it. My friends had all been giving a hard time about not bringing the TJ (the rock crawler) but after seeing the 4 door in action, they were all impressed and a little sad about all the money they spent on their own rigs to get to that point.

Side note, a factory stock Rubicon 4 door was the most impressive rig I saw on Tipover Challenge, it eased up without spinning a tire, while the modifieds were slipping tires, so it definitely made me a believer in the factory designs (as much as I love to hate the modern computers:ylsmoke:).

I have to agree that even a stock 'base' model Jeep can do FAR more than most people think.....

Its a fine line to pull off a modification on a stock vehicle and have it work as good or better than stock in all circumstances.....and long term durability. When you start having to figure in things like highway performance and/or ride, or towing stability....it gets even more difficult!

Rubicon

It s just piece of mind, winch mild lift 33's you are ready fro almost anything and it is all warrantied. I went with it mines an 08 4 door with electric stuff which I love.

it really depends what you want to do with it... having had jeeps since 1980 with my first CJ-7 Renegade, a few Cherokee's and a couple of TJ's a Saraha and now my Rubicon - for me it was really just piece of mind - the Rubicon has a few more bells and whistles but mildly crappier mileage - I preferred the Sahara's interior. The Rubi is wearing a 4" suspension lift, 33" tires (narrow profile) and a winch... it does exactly what I want it to - gravel/fire roads - some mild wheelin' as it's my DD - if I where going to do some serious wheeling/mudding/bush bashing I'd go with a sport and use the money I saved on the Rubi and invest it in some serious mod's... both are extremely capable the Rubi just happened to come with what I wanted and insurance paid for it after my Sahara was written off by a guy on a cell phone in a Dodge 3500

Unfortunately the only "programmer" for the 12's is the AEV ProCal which lets you adjust things like tire size and gear ratio to correct the speedo / ESP system. As I understand it the aftermarket tuners haven't yet been able to reverse the encryption scheme on the newer ECU's and thus can't reprogram them [yet].
