Rust - Puerto Rico

I'm about to put a deposit on a Gen 3 that was shipped in from Puerto Rico. I haven't seen the truck yet and I'm concerned potential rust issues in the future from all of the salt spray and humidity. Has anyone had any issues with their Gen 3 and rust?

They are painted pretty well, have you seen pictures? That should tell a lot, check the leading and trailing edges of the fender wells. You couldn't find one locally or you wanted a PR model?

Can't find one in AZ with less than 150K miles. Found a nice low mileage example, but photos could only tell but so much. I'm less worried about the sheet metal and more worried about the undercarriage, screws, bolts, etc. I was hoping some of the rust-belt guys might chime in on their experience of wrenching their trucks.

We are bit spoiled here in AZ :).

Dude there is a 60k mile '03 or '04 in Las Vegas for $5900, gen 3 3.8 and XLS trim so no leather! It's blue too, I debated buying it but I just don't think a Gen 3 is going to do what I want it to do. We'll see though, I may pick it up on the way back from the Rubicon if I like how the Gen 3 conquers the 'Con. It's fair game, I think the car lot is called stop n go or something. Looks like a really nice rig and not a lot could have happened to it in 60k, i'd still do a timing job right away to be safe.

Thanks for posting that up. I'm looking for another in the Limited trim as I prefer the 5 speed and will eventually re-gear to the 4.90. Good luck with the truck!

I would caution everyone to be careful with the mileages posted by sellers on these trucks. I'm not sure if it because Mitsubishi's are easy to exploit, but I've encountered more Montero's with rolled back odometers than any vehicle I've ever encountered. Probably 75% of the trucks I've seen with less than 75K miles were altered (including mine!). I'd highly recommend a Carfax report and would certainly walk if the condition doesn't quite feel like it matches the miles.

I can def chime in on the effects of constant salt spray in winter time...it wreaks havoc everywhere.

To give you an example...I have never seen a gen 2 monty here in NYS, I have never seen a gen 2.5 here in NY, I have only seen like one gen 3 on the road here and seeing them on craigslist here in NYS is extremely rare also. In NYS they salt the roads all the time, whenever it snows (all the time) in winter time. Constant salt is a destroyer of vehicles, not just the underbody but everywhere.

I see tons of Gen 3 Monteros where I live. Rust isn't as big of an issue for the Gen 3, it seems. Gen 2s are quite rare, and I have never seen another NL on the road in the Northeast.

DONT HAVE TO WORRY MY FRIEND!!

jejejejejeje, you don't have to worry for those details my dear friend, I live in the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, the temperatures here are around 70 to 90 F, between July and November the humidity could be around the 80%, because is the raining season, but is not a worry for corrosion. The salt spray is not common here, because the salinity concentration could affect your car if you live for example right in front of the ocean!! also, a great advantage you'll have with that Montero is going to be a lower millage because here the distances are not that long. I have a beautiful Gen 2.5 Montero 2000, Dakar Edition, as I know, it was just for sale here in the island with aluminum wheels and fender spoilers, this baby is like NEW, check out the photo, with ORIGINAL PAINT, and I live in the city of Rincon, just a block away from the beach!!!. Just buy it and enjoy it my friend Montero 2000 Dakar Edition.jpg

I'd really like a PR car since they came without a factory roof rack and had the GLS 16" wheels. There was one for sale in Florida but it was gone before I even contacted the guy.

Salt spray????? jejejeje, that is just if you live right in front of a windy beach!!! humidity could be 75 or even 85%, but with 90 degrees temperatures, is doesn't affect a car here. I live here in Puerto Rico, I have a 2000 Dakar Edition and just check the conditions of this beauty!!! Montero 2000 Dakar Edition.jpg

Do not fear a little rust. It builds character. A can of break away and patience is all you need. If that doesn't do it you'll get good at drilling them out. I treat it like a boat. Any time I have a chance, I paint stuff. I've spent hours with a paintbrush under my truck. I try and log some paint time at least once a year. It is never ending. I redid brake lines a few years ago as those were all toast. Fuel lines are next, hopefully maybe this winter. The Montero has a lot of heavier gauge steel underneath on brackets and stuff. I haven't lost anything major yet, biggest thing was those brake disc shield things, I lost one of those to rust. Otherwise most of what I see under my truck looks rusty but really will take a long time yet before it gets bad. Paint, paint, and more paint.
