Ryan's 91 FJ80

Our family is expanding (we are 3 now with 1 due in June) and decided that it was time for a larger vehicle. I decided I wanted a Land Cruiser and started looking at 100 Series Land Cruisers. After decided that we didn't want to spend that much (financing was something we didn't want to do), we started looking at 80's and found a nice, 91, with some nice mods for a price we could afford cash.

Enter my 91 FJ80, 3FE. It has 174k miles on it, some nice Fox remote reservoir shocks, ARB front bumper, Toyota OEM snorkel, OME medium springs and 33x10.50-15 BFG AT's. The interior was clean and the body looks pretty good. We made a deal pending new cats put in and it passing a smog test. Three long weeks later, I drove it home.

Within 70 miles of owning it, the CEL came on. I pulled the codes, (21 and 28). I ordered new Denzo oxygen sensors from Amazon.com ($92 total!). The next afternoon, the rear window regulators broke. I have yet to pull the door panels off to see what the issue is, but for now, the rear windows will stay in the up position! The speedo cable is also making a horrible racket. Ordered a new one to fix it. Geez, lets not have anything else break right now!

I haven't mention yet, but this thing is SLOW. I mean, slow, slow. I don't know how people run 33's and stock gears on these Cruisers with the 3FE. It's terrible on the highway and only marginal on the street. I'm making an appointment to have 4.88's, rear ARB locker and the front axle serviced. I never realized how expensive it was to gear an 80. It's about double what my first Jeep TJ cost. "Think longterm" I tell myself. It's going to make it a better vehicle. I don't expect it to be quick even after the gearing. I drive 55-65 to get the best fuel mileage.

Congrats on the new Cruiser, Ryan.

Lots of folks love the 3FE, and for good reason. A bit of reading up on ih8mud will give you some great ideas of why, and plenty of good tips for getting the most of out of the FJ80 as a platform. Basic adjustments and tuning will net you some great "by the pants" feedback as far as drivability goes. A few quick options (I would advise searching mud for these if you're not familiar with them) are adjusting your throttle and kick-down cables, advancing your timing (I didn't do this, but many do), and doing an all around tune up.

Here's a .PDF of tune up stuff for the 3FE: http://www.sdsysdesign.com/tlc/images/Strife/3FE TuneUp.pdf

I would recommend adjusting the throttle and kick-down cables to start off with, as many people report these help a lot.

Your truck looks great!

Nice 80 I just picked up a 97 LX450 with a 1HD-FT diesel in it and I'm loving it. Ironically I was looking at gear prices and thought wow they are giving them away, I re geared my g wagen myself and the cost of one gear set is about the same as the entire job in my Lexus.

I need to do an oil change this weekend. The previous owner did these wacky 5 quart oil changes (8.2 quarts total). He ran Mobil 1 10w-40 and changed it every 5k miles. I want to switch to a conventional as I have read that the engine was never designed to run synthetic, thus there is no benefit to running it.

The manual states to use 10w-30. I've read that people run 10w-30, 15w-40 and 20w-50. If it matters, I plan to change the oil every 3k miles. I figure I'll drive this about 5k-7k miles a year. The engine does have an oil leak, but I believe it is the oil pan gasket.

Thoughts?

I know the guy I bought mine from was running 15w40 rotella because he thought it slowed down the leaks...probably did but I switched back to the recommended weight and just replaced a couple of gaskets...1fzfe though...I am using mobil 1 with the big filter...

I think I will return the 20w-50 and buy some 10w-30.

In other more exciting news, I've made my appointment to have the Cruiser regeared, ARB locker installed, front axle rebuilt, new speedo cable installed and new oxygen sensors installed.

In even more exciting news, the driver's front window motor/regulator has given up. It will only put the window up halfway. That makes 3 of 4 windows with issues. Awesome.

Filled up the Cruiser for the first time today. 12.9 mpg. Not too shabby considering it needs gears badly and I was out on some fire roads for part of the tank. It's getting gears put on Wednesday, hopefully that will up the MPG's a little more.
