Sankey --- following a Landcruiser

Sankey Trailer

I have had this trailer for almost six months. Unfortunately I am only just now getting around to finally starting the project.

Background: We decided to start looking for a trailer for a couple of reasons.

First being I couldn't figure out a good way to have a RTT and carry three or more surfboards at the same time. Granted we aren't always surfing (don't I wish), but there is nothing like heading down Mex. 1 with surfboards hanging off the rack into the next lane and having big trucks go blazing past you.
Second I have gotten tired of having the RTT and the associated weight up on the roof.

I found the trailer on the local craigslist back in March.

Impression I must say these appear to be built really well. They come with surge brakes, I think. The suspension has a cable around the axle to prevent it from going anywhere. There is also a rubber bump-stop between the axle and frame. I believe these are rated at 3/4 ton capacity, but please correct me if I am wrong. They also have three leveling jacks which are quite cool.

Purpose/Desgin The goal for now is to mildly mod it and see how we like "trailer life." I really want to have a Toyota bolt pattern on the wheels, which I believe will mean an adapter of some sort. Then a hinged lid, with the RTT mounted on that. Possibly adding some kind of battery charging system, water storage later on.

Things to do I have removed one drum and the bearings appear to be good, but I am still going to order another set and replace them, keeping these as a spare. I also need to figure out the axle seal. The shocks are shot - which leads me to a question... When measuring shocks do you measure from end to end or from eye to eye? Also does anyone know of anywhere one might find a list of shocks along with their compressed and extended lengths? And what brand would you recommend? I was thinking of KYB (from my VW days)

I am thinking the lid will open to the passenger side, unless someone has some reasons to sway me another way. I will also be lining the inside box as well.
I will probably also change the lunette for a lock-n-roll eventually.

Without further ado...

Edit While I really like this trailer, with the super-cool Defender style (is that what they're called) lights. If a Land Rover guy has a m101/m416 they want to trade let me know before I start going too far and cutting things up.

Just a quick update...

I also ordered some new shocks, Rancho RS9119, which were on clearance from Man-a-fre. These are the 5-way adjustable model. The old shocks were/are so bad, that I compressed one to measure it, and it still hasn't rebounded back. Ha!

I have the new bearings and and races installed on one side, the only thing is that the axle seal for the drivers side has disappeared. I think I may have inadvertently thrown it away, since it was wrapped up in some blue shop towels.

Which leads me to a new question? Do any of you Land Rover guys know if there is anywhere here in the states that you can get Sankey parts. I have sourced some, but they are in the UK. (ughhhh)

Parts for Sankey's in the USA are like hen's teeth. The trailers were never exported to the USA, all the ones currently here were either brought in as; personal imports in the 80's when regulations were less strict, worked their way down from Canada as technically illegal imports, or were imported illegally from the UK. I know of examples of all three.

My only suggestion for parts is that you get in contact with Steve at www.moving-parts.com he can help you out with the shipping side.

Dude, Thanks! I have the manual printed out, and I replied to the thread.

Martyn, Thanks too! I will try and contact them to see if they can help out.

I was able to source the hub seals from a Land Rover Parts source in the UK.

:wings:
They will be coming via, in your best Thurston Howell III voice, "the royal air mail."

Now my only problem is I am having Land Rover lust, after looking around so many websites with cool Land Rovers. :costumed-smiley-007
