Only use the OD in 3rd or 4th. Make sure it is full of oil and check it frequently.

Make sure your balls are topped up with 90wt.

Not sure why the exhaust is not right. Are your motor mounts shot?

So you do engage it while in motion? Okay then. Is the oil connected to the gearbox or does OD have its own reservoir? The service manual didn't say anything about overdrive...

Not sure about the motor mounts. Will check.

Also, it is leaning to the left but I believe that's the leaf springs drooping... Not sure yet.

EDIT: Found this instead.

I have an overdrive in mine,
I use as if it was a 5th gear.
but i use it when the main gearbox is in 3rd or 4th.
It drops the revs by about 28%
its a fairey overdrive

it has its own oil resoivoir

look for the brass drain plugs.

it fits on the rear of the PTO

Thanks, will change the oil on that!

Well, my dad helped me out today and he just say, 'forget it' and just bolted it on. The muffler is installed, rattles against the chassis but whatever.

The engine is tractor-y enough to cover muffler rattle.

Next up is the swivel balls, exterior lights that were bought, gearbox gasket, and figure out why it's leaning to the left side.

We're having a debate on whether it's the shocks or the leaf springs that are the culprit.

Also, 235/80/16 rubs against the chassis when turning right but not left. Steering alignment perhaps or the tires are just too big?

Bought Prestone synthetic DOT 4 brake fluid for a possible flush tomorrow. Is this sufficient? It's the only fluid available.

dot4 is more than suitable :)
for your lean, it'll be springs. the only way shocks can stop you sitting square is if you've got one that's waaaaaayyyy too short and stopping the spring extending itself back to rest.
my sIIa rubs the rear side of the right hand front wheel at full lock too. I'm pretty sure I've got a damaged/broken centre bolt on the rh front spring as the axle seems not to be sitting where it's meant to. plus a couple of broken leaves making it lean likely doesn't help either. 4

Thanks for info, Cameron! Now since it looks like I'll have to replace the leaf springs, what are people's thoughts on parabolic leaf springs? From what I've read, it adds lift and provides a somewhat better ride.

I wonder if the leaf springs will fix the rubbing issue...

Steering stoppers.

bolts with a tab on it that stops the wheel from turning to far.
look for them on the swivel ball housing

download a series 3 repair manual

it has great diagrams and reasonably detailed instructions

Thanks. That's what my friend thought it would've been that causes the rubbing. Either that or it's in conjunction with the leaf spring issue.

Tomorrow will be an interesting day. :)

Jump on Rovers North forum and Guns and Rovers forum. If you haven't already, contact Wise Owl or Rover Park Boys if you can't find parts in the Great White North. Rovers North is about the best parts house here in the U.S. although Ike over at Pangolin4x4 is really making them work for thier money...he's great to work with too.

I daily drive mine; '73 88 NAS. I leave OD engaged on pavement and conduct weekly PMCS....keep up on maint!! The other thing to know...if its not leaking its empty.

Congrats!!

Thanks, rat patrol! Just emailed Rovers North for a username application and will check out Guns and Rovers after!

Sunday was interesting, indeedy!

Random thing found today: a block heater! Don't know if it works yet...

Cleaned the undercarriage somewhat with Spray Nine and pressure washing.

So we started adding swivel grease in to find out where it leaked and it wasn't hard to find it . The grease pushed out this watered down oil mixture so it was like a flush on its own :

Ball joint looks pristine!

The leather gaiter doesn't have holes or tears but it was just poor installation from the previous owner. Refolded the leather, tightened the bolts and the leak subsided from 'gushing' to 'drip'.

The right one wasn't leaking because it was bone dry. Used leftover grease to start pushing out the old oil and the leak is in the same spot!

Same deal; readjust the leather gaiter and it's less leaky.

Exterior lights were also replaced:

Looking good! Brake fluid flush and gearbox gasket were not addressed but there's always another day.

I don't have gaiters on my POS. They've got a wiper seal in the swivel housing which should hold the fluid in. I thought mine had run dry recently but just needed a top up. Can't be in bad condition after all.
A couple of pages back when I suggested centrebolts may be your issue: definitely check this out before buying new springs! Parabolics would be a cool upgrade nonetheless, though. Keeping an eye out for some for mine now but seeing as it'll never see road use a set of altered stock springs would probably suffice.

Thanks, I'll definitely check that out first before going down the springs route.

The leather is not designed to hold the oil in. You need new rubber seals.

Those original lights are worth dollars. Hopefully you just replaced the bulbs.
