So is a scangauge worth it? Pros/Cons?

I know a lot of Tacoma guys run them..

I could see it being useful to monitor stuff like trans temp or to check engine codes if your check engine light comes on. I don't always have my laptop with me, so a scan gauge would be helpful.

I opted for the UltraGuage. 1/2 the price of scan guage, the only thing it doesn't show is the trans temp.

my 96 will not tell the scanguage my trans temp anyhow so the ultraguage was the easy choice. I think on the 4runner side it was 99 and newer that could report trans temp so there must be a crossover point for tacomas too.

I've been wondering the same thing. I have an 01 4runner and have been considering getting a Scangauge.

the scan gauge will monitor trans temp in the first gen tacomas?

It does on my '02 Tacoma with the auto transmission (main reason I got the Scangauge). It doesn't monitor by default, you have to program in the code. Not sure if it's the same for that era of 4Runner or 2nd gen Tacomas.

i've got an 02 tacoma as well so thats good to here. i would really like to be able to monitor the tranny so i will probably end up with one of these. thanks for the info.

I got a Scangauge II a few months ago. I found the best price at Advance Auto.com.
Wait till they have the 15% online + $25 coupon + free shipping sale, and the Scangauge will essentially end up costing only $110. ($159-15%=$135, -$25 coupon=$110)

I have one on my '04. I got it specifically to keep an eye on the trans temp. It did take a little extra work to get it to display the AT temp but nothing hard. Now that I have it I really like being able to keep an eye on a wide variety of things.
On the display you have 4 readings. on mine I choose the AT temp (obviously), the voltage, the instantaneous MPG (helps me reign in my right foot :) ) and intake air temp which gives a rough idea of the ambient temp.

I bought one of these too off the Tacomaworld group buy. I used it for a few months trying to improve my gas mileage but I got tired of resetting it every time I fueled and I found I really didn't pay attention to it after a while.

i use it for my engine temp (last truck has my paranoid about over heating) and for intake air temps. For me being able to monitor those 2 items and reset/read any CEL's was all i needed. If i towed tranny temp would be good, but i have an F350 super duty diesel for towing.

i also find the gas gauge & mpg alarm thing annoying. I tried it to, but quickly removed that from the screen.

Has anyone had any luck with transmission temperature codes in a 2012 or 2013? I have tried almost all the codes I have found online, with no luck.
