Schattenjager's 1997 LX450

The FZJ80 Redux!!! Having owned a bunch of cars in my life, I occasionally remember a car or two that was so special, I start to miss it. The 97 Land Cruiser was one such great. I had it all built and needed nothing except proper tires, not the cost savings retreads that caused a major problem for the buyer. (Sorry again Adam) But, she sold to a good home and I jumped into a u-haul and headed to Alaska for a few months. Bought my old Disco II back from my boss up here. Lost it's engine the day I registered it. Flirted with a black Jeep Cherokee for a while, but was afraid of the miles and sketchy history. Then it was on to a 4runner which was pretty neat if you wanted to conquer a playground, but it lacked the solid feel of an 80.

After much hemming and hawing, I happened across this deal: 1997 LX450 loaded to the gills with working everything, no paint issues and ZERO rust. Tail gate looks factory new!

It will need some base lining right away - front brakes and rotors, odd squeak from the steering wheel on occasion, and a slight hesitation in the motor (tune up?), lube the birfs and update the running lights with the LED's. Then off with the running boards and paint the wheels!

Here she is:

Excellent overall condition - full service history is in hand and the lady was careful at getting things done. Leather and paint are 100% Carpet is about 90 percent.

So nice to be in the saddle again - if everything works out this going to be a long term commitment. Didn't know what I had till it was gone. Thankfully I can try to remake the first 80 and have wondrous Cruiser adventures again. Stay tuned for rapid goodness to occur!

Here is the ever-faithful Atlas doing a Birf inspection for me after he helped get the uber useful basket aboard:

*edit - fixed the million typos from trying this on an iphone. Geez - won't do that again....*

I take it you didn't want to wait for the 93 to come down in price...too bad the 93's are my favorite. Big bus tranny and all. Your lexus is unique and probably a better deal, it looks great and unmodified which is a perk in some ways. congrats.

I know it was early and whatnot, but your spelling is uncharacteristically bad. Nice rig though and congrats on the purchase. How much did you spend? (if you don't mind saying)

Too funny - thanks for the 'uncharacteristic' modifier! Late in a long day, two benedryl, and an iphone do not make for a happy poster! I was just too excited to wait! :victory:

It is not in a Schattenjager's fashion to waste time - so here is the first 12 hours of ownership mod list:

Sears Platinum battery
removed sliders
painted wheels
front brakes - which took about 47 seconds :victory:

Todays results:

Need some ideas:

With the Lexus fender flares being more integrated into the gaudy body side moldings, I am having a hard time imagining how it would look with the flares, molding and rear bumper blacked out a la Line-X. I don't see an elegant way of removing the molding and leaving these flares. Would I keep the body molding and black it out too? The other option is to de-flare the rig and ditch the side molding all together, but that may lead to bigger issues as I do not know how it is attached. The Line-X on the hood is HIGHLY functional as it is a great place to set a map, cup of coffee, or tool without sliding off or marring the paint. The flairs benefit from added toughness on the trail and eliminating any worry of the clear coat peeling away, which seems common. Replacement flares from a Land Cruiser are cost prohibitive. What would you do???

Also, found this toy in the rear door ashtray. Have named him: 'Lexus Khan'
