So how many holes have you dug in your life? apparently not many in land where tree's have roots, rocks, and then there is in the mountains where there is nothing but solid rock that would need stick of dynamite to make a whole. When lived in TX; after my bud Jake passed (yellow lab) took me 3.5 hours to dig a hole thru solid clay with an AX and shovel; no roots, had to chop out the clay, to get him burried in a 3foot deep hole and I was in kick ******** shape then too. As to rock.. these days the Rubicon in NorCal is starting to get gross. Toilet paper and peoples unburriable shiat behind every rock. (well that is what I heard.... could be an exaduration)
Point being...... the bury it works in 1/2 the places you will travel and if it is popular area.... bury it is not good cause the cumulative effect of so many doing it off the same trails overwhelms the environment. Tis why many popular US hiking trails require everyone to carry in and carry out all their own Shiat...... even that shiat.

Being a two-door Jeep guy, I'm always looking for saving space. I think I've mentioned this before, but about three-four years ago I bought a pop-up toilet for my privacy tent. It's in a nice round case that unzips. It then pulls out of the case and poops... oops... I mean "pops-up," and easily folds back down. Instructions say that it supports 330 lbs. (which is more then my wife and I weigh combined!). It also comes with 12 individual bags (yes bags!) with absorbent powder that works. I still do double bag.
Honestly, my wife's number one obversion to camping is the lack of facilities, but she'll use this at night when no other facilities are available. I think it's great! It could sit up higher, but that can be fixed with some blocks of wood. It's made by Black Pine, if it's still available?

The places where they specifically REQUIRE toilets is usually because they don't want people burying it anymore regardless of the kind of bag you bury it in. That's really the only reason I got into bringing my own toilet. Like you said I'm fine with ziplock bag with a small trowel and roll of TP.
But in the southern Utah deserts the poops don't decompose, they dry and mummify and the increased tourist traffic meant some places you couldn't dig a new hole without digging up the feces of two other holes buried before you.
Then there's the whole process of a "smear" disposal in the desert which we won't go into...

I originally planned on the luggable loo but a 5 gal bucket takes up too much space

I have ran a PETT toilet since 2008 that uses the WAGG bags.
This year on vacation my girlfriend almost tipped the thing over sideways as well as I in the past.
While they fold up pretty small, I do not care for sitting on it or having the family jewels touching the bag inside.
In the past I have owned two Thetford type of toilets, and I ordered the Thetford 320P (P for piston, superior to the bellows type IMO) from Amazon.

The upper bowl part is as large as their bigger capacity holding tank one, but I went for the smaller capacity tank on the 320P to save space in my rig.
Only time will tell when we use it to see if I made the right choice, and if not, I will get the bigger capacity tank model.
Having used this type of toilet in the past in my two tent trailers I owned, they are far better to sit on and be stable than the 3 legged PETT one.

I use a trasheroo and Lugable loo I buy the military wag bags from Amazon in big lots since we also raft. So easy and in the trasheroo odor is not an issue until I can find a dumpster. I have the trasheroo on my tailgate and I am a women btw. Some of those chemicals are really bad for septic systems, formaldehyde. They closed some RV dumps in Oregon because of formadehyde, stuff stopped breaking down. Ecosafe or Riverbank toilets are popular with rafters.

I'm not in love with it but my Pleasureway Traverse came with a Thetford Porta Potti (235 IIRC). It's short but designed to fit in a cabinet and it's saved my butt (so to speak) a couple times. Tried the dry bag from Pett but on a different toilet and that's another acceptable choice but the Porta Potti's, if you're willing to deal with the lower tank are about as close to using the toilet at home, especially if you get the models that are closer to residential height. If you use a pit toilet or RV dump, it's hardly any different than dumping an RV tank with a hose. Still gotta rinse them to keep it odorless and somewhat sanitary.
