scratch build Trailer for my diesel Jeep Cj5

Its my own little custom creation. I took a Yamaha twin street bike engine, custom chassis, Yamaha dual sport/motocross suspension and made kind of a hybrid. I also have a matching sidecar for it. I can see if I have any other pictures of just the bike.

Yes for $1,200 just build. For that much you can have a custom rolling chassis and perhaps a basic starter tub.

But that Bantam is uber original...jeez right down to the Bantam logo and the OEM tail light. The guys over on the Bantam T3-C board are probably drooling.

Ok, So I bought the flat bed/box. I will use this for my tub. I ordered steel should be in this week. I am ordering my axle soon. I'll post some pictures as soon as I make some headway.

OK....man, Its been awhile. Sorry its going so slow. Ive got too many irons in the fire right now. I did buy the truck bed thingy. I actually bought two Toyota trucks for $600. One is a decent runner that will take place of the firewood hauling requirement for this trailer build. This is good news because now it can make this a more Camping/Expo specific trailer. I will try to post some pictures of both trucks and the bed I will be using for the trailer. It is a bit rusty but should work well. It already has a beefy frame it also uses 1/8" steel for the sides and floor. I'm just going to tie into the bed frame with the trailer sub-frame. My steel just came in. I got 2.5" .250 wall. 24feet for $103. I also got a price on an 3000lb. axle/springs/perches/ubolts from ABC trailer with 5x5.5 (jeep) bolt pattern. Shipped to my work address for $199 I just need to order it.

Progress!

Made some progress today. I torched the bed off of the truck frame, and started cleaning it up and cutting off anything that is unnecessary. I have 3 or 4 spots that need cut out and patched but really it is very solid over all. this tub id surprisingly heavy! MY 3000LB axle will be here Friday. So I can really go to town on it this week end!. I have all my steel here already. 2.5" .250 wall. Can't wait to get rolling on this. before summer gets here! The body has a nice little step bumper and a license plate holder......one less thing I have to build. My wire wheel & grinder is going to get a work out on this project.

Any ideas how to mount the axle to get enough lift to keep clear the tires. The hub face is the same as the vehicle so the tires will be completely underneath the bed just like it was on the truck? I will put the springs on top of the axles and drop the hangars as much as possible but I'm not sure that will be enough. The problem is that the truck frame dipped down in front of the rear wheels and the trailer frame will be straight. Any thoughts? I will be running tires that are around 30" tall. Thanks!

Fedex guy came today!

Not sure if anyone is looking at this or not....but my axle came today. Started mounting it. Having trouble getting enough lift to clear the bed. I might have to run smaller tires than planned or get taller springs. I will post some pictures when I have a little more time. Thanks!

Here are some quick shots. The axle is just sitting there blocked up temporarily to give me an idea of hight. I may have to cut small wheel wells into the tub or use lift blocks if I want to run anything bigger than a 235. I also don't know how much spring droop I will get when I flip this thing over. The springs are 1750lb each. let me know what you think. I am trying to do this without buying new springs or anything too drastic at the moment.

I'm watching the build as I'm sure others are as well. You're doing a great job so far. I can't help much but what you have done so far with the drop down blocks is the only way i know to get more height. Just make sure you have some side to side support for the blocks. I think putting in some small fenders would like nice and alot better than going any larger than the blocks you have right now. Sorry I can't be of much more help. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Sharpie. I'm glad you are following and appreciate the advice. I Was out camping so haven't been working on the trailer until today. I got the braces welded in for my perch extension. I still may plate them on the sides, but I think they are pretty strong since everything is tied into the .250 wall tongue. I also welded the perches on the axle I'm pretty much don with the under side until its time to paint, so now I need to figure out how to flip this thing safely. It was heavy before I started welding hunks of steel to it..... I will have to get creative to flip this thing so I can keep moving!

One other thing......Once I flip it over, I will be working on a "ladder rack" type setup to support a RTT. Are there any special dimensions I need to adhere to? I am probably going to be getting one the larger CVT tents......Probably the Mt. Rainer or something similar. Thanks!
