I am not an expert but I recently got a Canon 50D and I use the ScanDisk 8GB EXTREME IV COMPACT FLASH CARD. So far it has worked extremely well. This camera can take 6.5 frames a second and the card handles it fine.

Nikon Note:

Card speed is largely irrelevant for Nikons of the D80/D200 generation. The cameras have large internal buffers; you almost can't find a card that is too slow.

Card speed matters if you fill your buffer (as in shooting sports/running wildlife) and that generally requires more than twenty shots at full speed; very rare.

Card speed also matters when unloading a card full of large images to your computer - if you have a fast card reader. Unload through your camera and you may never see the difference.

No reason not to buy the faster cards, but just be aware that you may not see any practical difference. I worry more about the reputation for reliability and have had no failures to date with SanDisk. YMMV.

Ditto. For my D300, I do shoot autosport events and frequently need to get as many shots as possible. When I was looking last June, I went w/ a pair of 8GB Sandisk Extreme 4 CF cards. May not be the absolute fastest cards but the combination of speed and reliability was critical for me.

We use an EXTREME III also and it never slows down enough for us to notice. I can only imagine switching to the new IV.

Great input Sgt Rock, I had forgotten about the speed comparison website. Nice reference.

Good points from Diplostrat too on your planned usage and if a fast card is really worth it for your camera and usage.

For me, I like shooting moving widllife and sporting events so I wanted the speed in case I over ran my buffer. I also enjoy the download speed. I shoot all RAW now and at 20MB per image, using a fast card and a stand alone card reader really speeds up the process when transfering 200-300 images at a crack.

For my camera, the fastest card out there now is the SanDisk Extreme Ducati 8GB @ 33.7 MB/sec but my Extrreme IV @ 30.5 MB/sec works great so no need for me to spend the extra $ for only a minor bump in speed.

Still learning but here are a couple pelican shots I took last week on the CA coast. To get these, I took over a hundred rapid fire shots of the pelicans flying overhead and dumped most of them, only saving a few good ones that I liked.

Great Birds!

Doesn't matter how many hundred shots you took, those are NICE birds. (And yes, I've tried to get the same shot.)

Interesting conjecture, with high speed 32 GB cards coming on the market, will the next generation of cameras have small buffers and simply rely on large, fast cards? Would seem to make a lot of sense.

Sorry to the OP for going a bit ot but...

Brad are those full frame images or did you crop them?

If full frame it's no wonder it was that hard to get the shot.

Getting these kinds of shots are a good argument for the newer >20MP sensors hitting the SLR's. Rather than worry so much about framing and long fast lenses. OTOH, you'll need 32GB uber fast cards & huge fast buffers for sure.

Ric,

Sorry about the highjack, I only meant to point out the need for speed sometimes. :)

I went back and checked the originals in Lightroom. Yes, they are both about a 56% crop. I used a Canon 50D with a Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8L IS lens. It was fully zoomed to 200MM and handheld for those shots.

You can see the rest of the shots from that weekend that I saved on SmugMug at bgarland.smugmug.com in the Pajaro Dunes 09 album.

Thanks for the compliments....now back to SD Cards. :sombrero:

OK. Just wondering. Imagine if that was the original image how difficult it would have been to track it and keep it centered in the frame. Can you say crapshoot?

To the OP, not sure what the pure xfer rates are for your D80 but that's what I'd be checking before buying the most expensive card.

I'd hate to learn that I had just spent a ton of $$$ on Ducati's to solve this problem only to learn the bottleneck was actually the camera throughput and I would have been fine with an Extreme III card instead.
