Sears Diehard Differences?

As my battery tray comes closer to being completed it is time to begin looking at batteries. Does anyone know the difference in these two Sears Group 34 batteries besides labeling, cca, and terminal post location? Seems as though the automotive battery is the way to go since the amp hours are the same. The cca is greater with the marine deep cycle. I think the side terminals and lower price make the auto battery the choice to go with.

Thanks.
I stumbled across handybobsolar a few months ago when I first started researching this stuff. It is a great site and I have passed it along several times on the interwebs and in person.

For the Odyssey batteries they have "buttons" to push on their website for automotive, marine, etc. but you'll see the exact same P/N battery listed in more than one category. I honestly think the AGM and construction of the Odyssey batteries blurs the line between Deep Cycle and starting battery. That is part of the reason I got them. Until I get house batteries installed I can run the fridge and various gadget chargers off the truck batteries with a little less worry (at least that's what I keep telling myself).

As I understand it, in general, marine batteries have thicker plates and are designed for repeated deep discharge where the automotive batteries are designed for high current but low discharge. The Diehard marine batteries are designed for both deep discharge while still providing high current so they perform well in both starter and boat/camper applications. I would go with the marine battery for your camper battery. The auto battery will not do as well with repeated deep discharge as the marine type.

I have both of those batteries. Far as I can tell beyond what has been said already about marine/starting battery differences is: The marine battery has a 4 year warranty (that has helped me out since I shorted one and needed a replacement).

Bottom one is an inch narrower than the other and 30cca'a more

They weigh the same so they should have equal amount of lead in each but the bottom one probably only has 5 rows but are thicker. I would personally use the bottom/narrow one

IMO, they are basically the same battery with different types of terminals. The added width of the auto battery is because it has side terminals. I would choose the auto battery since it has a longer warranty. I'm guessing the difference of 30cca's is in error… and not really significant enough to worry about.

I recommend folks go to the link I posted above and read about the differences between starting, deep cycle and marine batteries. They are different and they serve different purposes. After reading think about the application(s) you are going to use the battery for then make a choice.

for example; using a starting battery in a deep cycle application will kill it pretty quickly. The lifetime of each kind of battery depends on the discharge recharge cycle.

I have reviewed a lot of battery specs and reviews. From a price vs performance standpoint the current model of the Sears Die-hard platinum look like a good choice to me.

I was just looking at batteries yesterday...I noticed PepBoys had a "Bosch Platinum" AGM battery that clearly was a rebadged Exide Edge for about $30 less than the Exides were going for. Chances are Exide makes the Die Hard Platinum too, but I don't know one way or the other.

I have a single battery system and a winch and fridge, and use an Optima yellow top for it's better durability under deep discharge conditions compared to a starting battery. How are the Die Hard Platinums for deep discharge?

BigSwede, Exide does make Die Hard batteries for Sears but not the Platinum line.

To the OP, I have not talked to Sears but I have previously corresponded with Odyssey with the same question. We all know Odyssey manufactures the DHP line. Here's what they said...

Hi, I'd like to know if your batteries designated for Marine use are the SAME INTERNALLY as your batteries for Auto use. I'm interested in the PC2150. I understand you offer it in a 31-PC2150 and a 31M-PC2150 but am wondering if that is just a difference in terminals.

Hello,

Yes, the only difference between any of the PC2150 ODYSSEY series batteries is labeling and terminal configuration. They all perform the same and are manufactured using the same TPPL AGM technology.

Thank you for contacting EnerSys/ODYSSEY.

Unfortunately those tried and true "difference definitions" don't hold for all batteries anymore. AGM batteries and some new physical construction methods blur those lines a LOT.

Chances are Exide makes the Die Hard Platinum too, but I don't know one way or the other.

The Die Hard Platinums are made by Odyssey (http://www.odysseybattery.com/batteries.html). These are a new construction AGM battery. Here is a snippet from their website: "Some batteries provide enormous cranking power. Others, deep cycle reserve power. The revolutionary ODYSSEY® battery is designed to do both."

So if you have one and only one battery and it needs to be both the starting battery and a "house" battery they seem ideal.

That answers that. Thank you very much for providing this info.
