From a 'mittens are warmer than gloves' perspective, you would need more inulation than with a sleeping bag (at a given temperature).

I remember several years ago I saw an interesting item in a military surplus catalog. I think it was Swedish, maybe? Don't remember. Anyway, it was a short sleeping bag that zipped onto the bottom of a parka. I thought that was a pretty cool idea: no sense in packing a parka and a sleeping bag if you could get away with a parka and half a sleeping bag... One potential problem, though, is that the parka wouldn't air out / dry out while you were sleeping.

I'd wear that thing in the desert on a 4º night with pride. I'm the type of person that freezes anywhere below 55º, so I'd probably wear it anytime it got remotely chilly.

It does have a zipper for night-night pee-pee time (sorry, I'm a Dad, that kind of language just starts to become natural), but it would only be a seller to me if it had durable soles. As it appears, it looks like it's only good for the inside...which would defeat the purpose. If I'm inside, chances are I'm already warm.
