Sell my 80? I need a voice(s) of reason.

I would absolutely keep your existing truck. Let's start pulling the motor today and prep it for a swap. When should I come over?

The 80 is still only used for trips and the occassional trip to the dog park.

I have been contemplating going down a tire size to improve power and MPG. It's all about the need vs. want.

The diesel swap is an option, but a long-range one.

The question is...
Do I want to start over base-lining a vehicle?

So, am I nuts...Or should I just care for the green tank for a couple more years?

Sure! Why not! To me that's part of the fun dude... baselining.. fixing stuff, building a new rig.

Your not nuts at all, i think about a new rig everyday. I would love to get into a diesel fj60. I think that would be pretty bitchen.

I get asked all the time... "so Dave, now that you've built the 80 are you selling it now?" lol

Like others said.. try driving the 60.. i bet the ride won't even compare to the coils vs. leaf sprung rig.

In California, a diesel swap is not really a viable option. From what I can figure it out it is pretty much a crap shoot with regards to the DMV. The only exception is the installation of a 4bt. I want one though. Although the new cruisers with the v8 Td would be nice.:)

Thus one of the main reasons I am attracted to this HJ60. It has a CA title.
Good 'ol California.

Nothing.
Just the fact that I get 11-12 mpg.

Gas is cheap, get over it :shakin:

Compared with Gasoline......
Diet Snapple 16 oz $1.29 ... $10.32 per gallon
Lipton Ice Tea 16 oz $1.19 ..........$9.52 per gallon
Gatorade 20 oz $1.59 .... $10.17 per gallon
Ocean Spray 16 oz $1.25 ......... $10.00 per gallon
Brake Fluid 12 oz $3.15 ......... $33.60 per gallon
Vick's Ny quil 6 oz $8.35 ... $178.13 per gallon
Pepto Bismol 4 oz $3.85 .. $123.20 per gallon
Whiteout 7 oz $1.39 ....... . $25.42 per gallon
Scope 1.5 oz $0.99 ....$84.48 per gallon
Evian water 9 oz $1.49..........$21.19 per gallon
Printer ink...............$5,200 per gallon

So, the next time you're at the pump, be glad your car doesn't run on water, Scope, or Whiteout, Pepto Bismol, Nyquil or God forbid, Printer Ink!!!!!

KEEP that 80 (or if you want to sell let me know)

At the current time, I plan on keeping my 80 because: they're finally getting to that age where they were ``the good old days'' of vehicles. They now look IMO like 60s did when 80s were the big rage.

I recently thought about selling my taco and going to and 80 or a 60. I originally wanted a 60 because they are so much cheaper up front. But since they are all 20 years old give or take they almost always will have some sort issue. So i started looking at 80's simply because they are more modern. I came to the conclusion that I could not afford an 80 finacially. If I were you I would keep the 80 and do an engine swap when it came time. If you are looking for another project get the 60. They ride rough, are slower, and seats and things like that will probably be on you mod list. They take more work I think to be a good expedition vehicle than what you have, but if that is something that interest you who cares. As for me, I love the old stuff. I am looking for 55 for a long term project.

going to a 60 from an 80 is a downgrade in comforts for sure.

You need to load down a HJ60 and hit the hiway to really see how under powered they are. you would be in the 17-20 mpg range loaded with a rack etc. on it. so not a huge increas in mileage.

I looked long and hard at alot of diesel cruisers up in canada recently and with the price of diesel around the same a gas right now I couldn't justify the diesel. Oil changes take more, fueling up is a pain as you need to where gloves or carry wetwipes to get the stink off (try picking up a 1YO kid with diesel smelling hands!) and up here is cold er county starting a diesel in the morning, even plugged in, is not the funnest thing.

A new diesel yes but an old 2H is getting hard to get motor parts for.

I just sold all our diesel vehicles(full size truck and diesel rabbit) and have all gas now as they are so much easier to drive

Buy and keep both of them. :)

I'm almost half joking, but seriously, if you could afford the diesel 60 and the price is not over inflated, you could buy it and drive it around for a few months and see how you like it. Then if not, hopefully you can resell it for what you paid for it.

Whatever you do, I would definately not get rid of the 80, until you've spent some time behind the wheel of a diesel 60, if you haven't already, just to make sure its your cup of tea.

Good luck.

Rarely am I considered a voice of reason, but don't do it. Just don't do it.

Your 80 is done right? No more big/high dollar mods...? And you have much aux fuel? 60 gallons?

I can't imagine any vehicle or any engine under the hood of any vehicle, that once loaded with trip equipment, that will see great mileage or great fuel savings.

Just nut up, take the 11MPG on the chin and put it out of your mind as soon as you hit that secluded beach with the sweet set. There is no ideal solution, nor ideal vehicle to get 20+MPG once loaded with enough gear to get away for a week or two.

That said, how much do you want for the 80?? :D

After having a vehicle for awhile, I know we get bored. I have the itch as of late, to sell my Tacoma and get a fullsize. I went test drove a few...

I am keeping the Tacoma, those test drives reminded why I like it so much.

Robb,

This is the one problem with swaps in CA. In a nutshell, the engine has to be from the same year or newer than the vehicle its going into. Also, it has to be from the same weight class or lower. From what I have researched the 4BT, GM 6.2/6.5/D-max etc are all technically not legal (But, as mentioned people are some how getting them registered), the VW1.9TD and MB 300TD are technically legal. There are plenty of threads discussing this elsewhere, so enough said on that. I understand the urge to jump on an HJ60 that is already registered in CA.
I personally am not willing to roll the dice with that much dinero involved in the swap to let some random person at the DMV decide my Cruiser's fate. I also am not willing to do the parts hunt if/when something breaks on an HJ/BJ60. That's more of a function of my mechanical skills at the present moment than anything else.
Having gone from an FJ60 to a UZJ100 and now most recently an FJ55, (also been cruiser-sitting by bro's 80 for the last 6 months) all in the last 2 years I can understand the itch to change. I loved the 60 but it was too rusty to sink a bunch of money into and the 100 was too nice and too complicated to get serious with (It was LX470, thought I'd mention that before I get totally flamed:) ) I stumbled upon this 55 and being a '72 its smog exempt in every state as far as I can tell. So I hope to avoid all the engine swap laws with the exempt status.
I am by no means an authority on any of this, these are just my thoughts on my similar situation. I will be looking to do an engine swap(hopefully diesel) and a 5spd in the future.
I'd probably just keep the 80 if its not a daily driver. My wife and I drive in her Saab 6/7 days a week. HTH.

I am darn sure not the voice of reason as I change vehicles more frequently than....well, you know what I mean.

60's are cool, so are 40, 45, 55's, but my favorite is an 80. When we sell the FJ my next vehicle will be another 80. Had a pretty cool one and sold it when we left Colorado. I miss it dearly. Like others, I certainly understand the "new project syndrome".

From what I understand they are legal. Since both of these engines are available in the states and are considered viable candidates for transplant. The reason the Toyota motor is not is because Toyota never brought in a Diesel variant of the 80 Land Cruiser.
